Heavens no, you go 66 into DC, you’re on Constitution and the you just hook onto Louisiana directly to Union Station. It’s one turn. Driving all the way to Baltimore is not easier.

Probably more likely to get jacked on a deserted late night Metro than walking from a fully disembarking train (which is likely to be crowded based on my recent Amtrak experiences), through a station with plenty of police presence, and into a waiting taxi.

Either one is fine, and yes New Carrollton will be more deserted. It’s just less moving around than taking the red line to metro center, and waiting for a silver, because Metro Center always seems to time trains so that the red arrives just after the orange has left, so you can be waiting forty minutes for trains (20 at Union Station, and 20 at Metro Center, which can be a concern if the metro system is close to closing). At New Carrollton, because it’s the beginning/end of the line, there’s always the “next train” for you to sit on . I, female, always did the above because I live on the orange line in Virginia so it was more direct. And OP, if you’re willing to drive to New Carrollton, it’s a lot easier to drive to Union station. And he’s a 20 year old guy, so he’s less likely to be bothered by anyone.

OP here. He’s taking NorthEast Regional but I’m quite sure that also stops at New Carrollton before moving on to Union Station. He could take the orange as you say to EFC, then Reston as you say. If the train is late, it is certainly easier for us to pick him up at New Carrollton or EFC. This is a great idea and thank you so much! I’m a huge plan B person and you just gave me a plan B - I have NO knowledge of Amtrak at all.

For the person who suggested an overnight, I’d gladly put him up in a nice hotel. It’s he who is balking at that. I’ll re-speak with him about that. He could also cab out to my cousin’s home and stay there overnight - they offered. From there, he could train or bus home the next day. I could even pick him up - it’s only 4 or so hours, and perhaps do Amish country on the way home.

I went to college in nyc and was sad to see how nyc has devolved, crimewise. We saw a guy shooting up right near the station in broad daylight.

I second the bus. Best bus is good. Also, why not stay the night in nyc?

Uber and Lyft prices have increased to ridiculous levels. Just go to the taxi queue. A metered taxi to Reston would be a quarter of the price of rideshare. People forget that taxis still exist. As for the safety of Union Station, I regularly return on a train that arrives after midnight and then walk to my Capitol Hill home. I keep my head on a swivel, of course, but have never been bothered by night goblins.
