They were third cousins, since they had a common great grandparent.

No, they don't. PP's great grandparent and that guy's great grandparent were siblings--because their grandparents were cousins. It makes PP's sister and the guy "3rd cousins twice removed" according to that chart.

I don’t know my third cousins at all. For all I know I dated one. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I'm Asian; spouse is European. I always joke that at least we know we aren't remotely distantly related.

In my family we have a name for third cousins: "strangers." It's fine but I wouldn't tell people if I were you.

How do you know that this person is your third cousin?

Ew. There are billions of other people to choose from. Aim higher, OP.

If you were raised together, then no, it's not ok.

I don’t know any of my third cousins. I think it’s fine.

As long as you're not going to have kids, who cares?

In other cultures, people not only can’t name their third cousins, but can’t even explain how third cousins are related. If you and your third cousin both feel comfortable having a romantic relationship, then it’s fine, but that would be the worst if you came onto him and he was like, “We’re related! What the hell is wrong with you?!”

My great grandparents were dead long before I was born and their siblings would be in other countries as far as I know. You are fortunate to have such a large extended family but I don't think it's worth the scandal.

It’s totally fine. Even if you had kids, the chances of a genetic issue are extremely rare. Plenty of cultures do this on purpose.
