Lots of people with large families have 2 sets of washers and 2 sets of dryers. No one I know with an expensive custom house however voluntarily puts their main laundry in the basement.

Yea...I'd never put a laundry in thr basement.

We have 2 washers and 2 dryers. One of a commercial bulk item set and the other a normal size for everyday use. We have a laundry room upstairs. However nobody folds. Things get immediately hung up.

We have the laundry room in the basement and with teen boys I love it. They come home all smelly from practice and I tell them to come in the basement door, drop their clothes in the washer and shower before they come upstairs. It keeps the smell and mess contained. I don’t want that stuff upstairs.

We built a custom home - have 3 laundry rooms, not closets. The one we use most is in the basement - family of 6 needs the facilities. Go for it op. This is why you build a custom home - for your needs. Asking losers on this forum who are accustomed to living in 2000 sq ft homes is a waste. They are lucky to have one “closet” for a LR.

We have about 7000 sq feet. We have a second floor laundry room with an adjacent walk-in closet with an island in it for folding. The island has drawers for clothes, jewelry etc. I would never want that huge laundry in basement.

Not OP. For us the tipping point was going to 4 kids - that's when we needed another dryer. We got a washer at the same time because that was the sale gimmick but it was the second dryer that made all the difference in the world once we hit 4 kids.

I know some wealthy people who have figured out that it is cheaper just to send housekeeper to laundry mat for a couple of hours a week. They can do 20 loads at once.

I like the idea of having 2 laundry locations (a small unit on the bedroom floor and then a real laundry room). I would not put the large laundry room in the basement though because that is so inconvenient. Do you really want the housekeeper disappearing down into the basement to change loads or iron every half hour? It is a complete waste of her time. Put the large laundry room on the main floor off of the kitchen or mudroom. It can also double as the staff room if you have other household staff like a nanny or houseman.

OK..the house is big and you can afford help but how big is your family? Do you really generate that much laundry. If you have 4+ kids who all do sports ok. Or have large amounts of regular house guests and fancy events. For my family of 4 with 2 HS athletes it would just not get used enough to warrernt it. I like having the washer away from the bedrooms so we do not hear it at night. Maybe when we get older it will be hard to carry it on the stairs but not currently.

My friend is an interior designer and has a similar setup. Large utility room in the basement for second fridge, cleaning supplies, luggage and washer dryer.

The main level (same as master) had a small laundry room with washer, dryer, ironing board, smaller vacuum and a few supplies.

The only thing I would add is a laundry chute! From third floor to basement.
