The Finger Lakes are okay, I guess. But if you want to raise your family in a place with top notch dining options, unparalleled educational opportunities, diversity and vibrancy, and entertainment not found anywhere else in the country (KenCen, Capitol Steps, Smithsonians) you may be better off staying in the State of Washington, Douglass Commonwealth

I grew up in a suburb of Rochester. OP, if you're talking about moving to Canandaigua, that may be okay, as Canandaigua is basically a suburb of Rochester, so you wouldn't be too far from the "big city amenities" (ex. hospital, airport, culture, etc). However, the diversity may not be what you're used to in the DMV.

However, I think that if you're living anywhere else on or around the Finger Lakes (Bath, Elmira, Corning, Watkins Glen) it may not be a good fit, as those areas are pretty conservative, and you're far away from big city amenities, as PP's have mentioned. Depending on your needs, Ithaca may work okay, as it's considerably more liberal than the surrounding areas.

+1. Went to school in that area, and it’s beautiful but really in the middle of nowhere. I found the weather and isolation depressing. It is possible to downscale your life here if you want it.

I would totally go. Nova is a soulless shithole.

Disagree 100%

whereas Utica is full of character?

Utica is full of characters (mentally imbalanced). I’m from there. The level of crazy ass batshit people on a per capita level is far higher in Utica than anywhere in the DC level.

+1 from another from there originally. My family is still there. It is very backwards but the Italian food is excellent. That’s the only positive I can think of.

The schools will be terrible.

Compared to what?

Depends on where you go. We’re in MCPS, which is pretty terrible. Some of the NY districts are definitely better.

Not sure how they would compare to NoVa.

that reminds me of college in central New York- just a horrifically depressing place once you leave one of the college towns.

I wouldn't because I hate being cold and I am not outdoorsy. This sounds miserable to me. YMMV

My family is still in the region. It’s very depressing. Many people are moving out. It’s hard to sell your house. Very few jobs. Weather is awful except for the summer. Kids go to college and move away.

I spent 7 years in the southern Tier of NY. Other than Wings and Speidies, there was nothing to offer. NOTHING.

Ithica is nice but it is a college town. Bath, corning, Watkins Glen, etc are all shit holes. Granted, they are a step up from where I lived (Binghamton).
