I'm Catholic, so the wrong kind of Christian for this post, but my understanding is that saying the man is the had of the household can be interpreted in a lot of different ways, and people in dysfunctional relationships are dysfunctional first, and provide the reasoning for it second. People say that they are in co-dependent relationships for all kinds or reasons: religion, children, family pressure, finances, fear, etc. But it's usually because they grew up in a dysfunctional family and are continuing the pattern. It's not like Christians have a monopoly on alcoholism or marital rape.

Too many people take a single verse either out of context or not in its entirety:

How many actually love their wives like Christ loves the Church? And yet they expect their wives to follow the submissive verse, but they don't think they need to follow things that they are told to do, or they twist words to suit their purposes.

This was not the intent of Christ's teachings. Men, who have held the power, just like to twist thing to suit their needs/wants, and I do include the picking and choosing by men of specific books and verses that comprise the Bible.

The wife does not have authority over her own body but yields it to her husband. In the same way, the husband does not have authority over his own body but yields it to his wife.

So abuser ex saw himself as head of the household and head of my body. Was obsessed with 'cleansing' me which to him was bizarre sex acts. Had twisted and warped ideas of satan talking to him and god too, telling him to do demented things. Its very easy for abusers to pick and choose from these verses to a create a narrative justifying their abuse. There are many christian men who use their sexuality and lust as a threat based on these verses. It's so f'ed up to me that these verses are actually things that people live by. I can't even begin to understand religious organizations that have gotten away with these mentalities for such a long time.

My cousin once tried to talk me into this. She’s Lutheran and lives in the middle of Missouri. Her justification was something like “you cannot have to leaders in the family. I trust my dh. This way the family runs smoothly. He makes all the decisions, and I take care of him and the family by cleaning and cooking. Also, it’s in the Bible!”

I said, no. Her dh is really weird BTW. Like quiet but when he talks he acts like he’s brilliant and has a self satisfied smirk on his face.
