I live in CA where car is King 👑.
In this area - cars seem to be status symbols.
Like an extension of their income, lifestyle, etc.
A lot of people DO judge people on what they drive unfortunately.
Many MLMs offer auto reward bonuses for luxury, high-end model cars in order to present its employees w/the image that they make bank.
I personally think it is all ridiculous.
Like high school where people judged your popularity on the name brand clothing you owned.

I'll judge you because you choose to jeopardize your family's safety. I wouldn't go on trips with a family of 4 in a tiny Honda fit.
You have the money, put your family in more solid car. I understand you don't want to spend on cars but you must spend on safety.

I love cars and are really into them. I don’t care what you drive, but care how you drive. Do you know how to follow basic courtesy? Can you park you car so it’s in the middle of the parking space? Etc. I do notice if you care for your car because of what make , model, trim.

Keep that car. It’s the last year of the Japanese manufactures fits (new ones are from Mexico). Drives like a go cart, parks anywhere, reliable.
It’s a city car, you don’t need crazy safety features b/c generally you are going 30 mph. For long trips rent a minivan.
We had a 2013, so sad DW made me sell it (too small, manual transmission was a hassle for her, etc).
We have a 2010 Accord going strong, keeping it till DS can drive it

I think the millionaire next door type is common around here. This isn’t south Florida. In fact I think showy expensive cars in an urban area with parallel parking and tight garages are just stupid.
This. I don't understand people who buy very fancy or enormous cars but live in the city. I think it makes you look like a tourist.

Me too! I have a 2013 Prius wagon, and I love it. Before getting it I drove a Toyota Echo for 13 years. I loved my Echo, I only upgraded because I needed more room for kids/child seats. It was a great car and I never had any issues with it other than routine maintenance, I was sad to let go of it. I don't GAF what anyone thinks about what car I have. When I buy a car I drive them into the ground before I get a new one. Even if I was rich I think I would still do the same. I would rather use my $ for other things like retirement, college savings for my kids, etc. I know people who get new cars every year or two, and I just can't relate.
I do still miss my Echo though...
