The Panera near us has had a sign on the counter for months. So has the one closer to my son's school.

McDonalds. Or any fast food. Dirty work but it is a job and they hire

My 16 year old did life guard training in May and was offered two summer jobs. I think the jobs are out there.

He doesn't need to have been on a swim team. My kids work as lifeguards and are the only 2 on the staff that were ever on swim team. Can he swim 4 laps of the pool? tread water for 2 min? Then he can do get certified.

This is a bit unsettling. A lifeguard only need to demonstrate very basic swimming skills?

CPR and all that other stuff too. Lots of responsibility.

those are the basic water skills (plus retrieving 10lb brick from the bottom of the pool) for shallow water certification. And yes, CPR and 19 hrs of online study.

IME retail stores don’t hire under 18s. He needs to look at restaurants and food service - sit down, fast food, and fast casual. My neighbor’s son is 17 and works at a casual family restaurant (think Applebee’s, Chili’s level) busing tables.

My daughter was never on swim team and she became a lifeguard this summer. She rarely even went to the pool growing up, but she is really loving the job. I think it's a fun summer job for teens.

Great American Restaurants is hiring food runners and hosts. They are also hiring servers and bar tenders but they definitely won’t hire teens for those jobs. I know high school kids who are working as food runners this summer. If you know anyone who belongs to a country club, ask them for a referral to their club. Most clubs are hiring wait staff or snack bar attendants or banquet staff.

Our DS17.5 worked at a burger joint for 6 months when it was only online school (no activities, no sports) happening and he had more time than normal. They were thrilled to have him, but once in person and activities ramped back up he gave 2 weeks notice, the district manager offered to be a future reference without Ds asking In a normal school year he wouldn’t work because he doesn’t have time. For this summer he specifically looked for seasonal starting months ago. He got a paid, in person, hands on internship offered by a local org, which he realizes is very lucky to have.


OP, unfortunately he needs to be able to work past Labor Day, lie and resign, or lifeguard.

Another parent chiming in to say that except for lifeguarding, it's not as easy to find a summer job as you think. Many places don't want just summer help and others require you to be 18.

for jobs like grocery store, apply and then resign at the end of the summer (or keep them part time though out the year). You are not required to tell a potential employer that it is a temp job

That’s not a good way to get a solid reference later. It was harder than I thought it would be for my 18 year old. She got hired by a summer camp but it was not her first choice.

I worked there. I also learned that I wanted desperately to get a college education so that I wouldn't have to work at McDonald's anymore. A valuable experience!

+1 for McDonald's. They always need staff and they're pretty good at training. It will be a good experience for your 17 year old, OP.

Why would you go in saying you just want a summer job. Say you want a job. At end of summer, if you want to quit, quit. If you want to stay on, stay on. Why do people feel the need to share so much information.

People quit jobs all the time. ANd who knows, maybe he will want to keep working a few hours a week during the school year? Not dishonest at all. You are not breaking a contract when you quit working at a store or restaurant. They will drop you as soon as they don't need you and not blink an eye.
