I don't think it is super weird. 14 is middle school age, and kids in middle school can be really brutal/hurtful/unthinking. I would def want to consider what kind of shape my kid was in at that age before encouraging a bikini. No need to set them up.

Third this rec! My 6 yo DD has noticed that all the 13 & up swimmers on her team wear these during open swim and was so sad they don’t come in her size. The girls at our pool wear the ones that tie in the back and in solid colors only.
