Sally and Sadie are traditional nicknames for Sarah. But that doesn’t stop people from using them as their kids legal name. I work with a Sarah that goes by Sally, and I also know someone who named their dd Sadie as her given name 🤷‍♀️

Joanie and Margo are two names I really want to come back.

I've been watching Halt and Catch Fire and there is a character on there named Joanie (a teenage girl in the late 80s). It's really grown on me and now I kind of love Joan, nn Joanie. Or just Joni, like Joni Mitchell. It has a cool throwback feel, like someone who would be described as a "tough broad" in the 50s/60s for spouting feminist ideas during book club. I'd love to know a Joan/Joanie!

Susie is cute, I like Suzanne more.

Linda is a terrible name.

Yours may not be, but traditionally (like 75 years ago), Sally was a nickname for Sarah.

My parents named me 62 years ago, and at the time, Sally was its own name.

I love that you want to use family names. What others think of your choices is really irrelevant. My family with southern roots likes to use a relative's names in tandem with another relative's name -- especially those who never married or had children which was common in the 1930-s and 1940's. I believe this practice creates additional affection and bonds among the generations and continues family traditions.

I like some of these names ... definitely like Susan, and love Susy (for some reason, I like this spelling the best) and Susannah.

I guess they're the names of my generation's moms. Just thinking about my friends' moms ... Ruth, Christine, Sherry, Tina, Nancy, Linda, Anne, Bonnie. Definite comeback potential!

I can't get behind Betsy as a stand-alone name.

I considered Heather in 2014. I think I also had Diane picked as a middle name for the name we didn’t wind up using.

My girls both have 80s/90s names that aren’t currently in heavy use.

I really liked the name Pamela, but my husband said no.

I think Susan is just fine, as well as most of the others on the list.

I also like Molly, Polly, Betsy (as nicknames.)

They can be nicknames but they are not always. I know a Sally who is just Sally and a Penny who is just Penny!

Nancy was historically a nickname for Anne. But hardly anyone thinks of it as a nickname anymore.

Plenty of names that were once nicknames for very traditional Catholic or Christian names have become stand alone names. Molly was a nickname for Mary, but now I only ever hear it as a standalone. Same with Sally. And for boys, Jack was once a nickname for John and is not an extremely popular name all by itself.

I think Maggie and some of the other Margaret nicknames are heading this direction as well. I love the name Maggie and wanted to give it to my DD five years ago but everyone gave me such a terrible time bout it being a nickname and having to call her Margaret (which I like fine but did not want to use as a name). So we went with something else. But then last year a friend of mine named her DD Maggie (not Margaret) and I love it! Glad to see it getting more acceptable.
