In a true system, the top 12-16 kids vary as they grow and change from 8-13 and then even more so through the middle school years until high school. At most Clubs, U12 is the year that they really start mixing up the teams within the age group. If it was status quo for a long time, it's no wonder they need to make changes at this point. I would expect a lot more changes U15-17 because some boys don't even hit a growth spurt until 15/16 years old.

It wasn’t the case. They were really really good and added players as things (and age) progressed. Covid froze tryouts last year (anybody remember?). The team has been top notch for a long time and people had a tough time cracking the roster inside or outside the club. They have improved as this season has gone on after a rough start, but if you are competing against MLS Academies and Bethesda, you need to broaden the talent base, and that’s what they can do now. There are new players on the team already playing major minutes this season.

They are getting bigger players in. They eventually had to play the game that everyone else did to stay competitive in the early teen/unbalanced puberty years: bring in the size.

I would assume so, but they are not a small team at all, they just don’t play big and dumb.

A lot more long balls to the corners to be intercepted by the giants, bypassing the middle completely. It's a strategy I see more and more teams do in the later years, even the 'possession clubs'.

Yeah, actually, I would not even mind if futsal were preselected (e.g., by invite only), but to tell kids that they are trying out when the coaches are not even looking at them is really demoralizing. That being said, my son's coach (who does not coach futsal) was a pretty good guy, so I don't blame him as an individual. But the system sucks.

And things like Futsal, etc. are pre-selected even when some kids are really great futsal players. There is a whole lot of kiss *ss shenanigans as well with a lot of fraternizing of the Coaches.

That's true. We didn't even bother bringing our kid to the MLSnxt tryouts because they do not even allow lower team players to practice with the top team. And things like Futsal, etc. are pre-selected even when some kids are really great futsal players. There is a whole lot of kiss *ss shenanigans as well with a lot of fraternizing of the Coaches. IF that's not your seen and your kid has outgrown their team, your choice is generally to have to switch Clubs rather than have to stomach that situation. We have seen kids come in for Mlsnxt that were on lower teams than my current kid and so-so get invited back so it tells me they value the novelty of it too.
