New England not really known for it's public universities... why focus there and on that? I mean between UVM, UConn, URI, Umass and UNH, those are all perfectly fine options (don't now about Maine) but there are so many other schools in the area, and yes New York is nearby enough that the SUNY system could be considered as well. Gun to my head, I'd have to say UConn is the best, but used to be UVM, which I think has dropped precipitously since I was familiar with it in the early 1990s. DH went to URI and absolutely loved it, and has many successful friends. Can't beat the setting really.

Let me try again. I think this thread reflects that there is no consensus that one school is The Best. Maybe UCONN is slightly stronger. However, as a nerd with a Ph.D., I wouldn't be so strong as to make it worth living in Storrs for 4 years. If I wanted to study puppetry, I might reconsider. I think all of the NE public universities have reputations as party schools.

OP here. Thank you for responding. I didn't realize that (some people think) Storrs is so bad! Would you recommend that a strong student who is interested in a public university strongly consider being a bit bolder and leaving NE? All of these perspectives are helpful. Thx.
