Subject: Rest In Peace Meritocracy
I don't agree that there are a million other kids with 800 Math SAT and 800 Physics Subject test. College is about academics. Or it should be. And he should have gotten into one of these schools. There are not that many more qualified applicants. The college have chosen to make bullshit excuses for some other agenda to select less qualified kids. I don't even know what that agenda is. But come on people, college IS about the ability to score 800 on a Physics test!!!Yes, there are some discrepancies they have to sort out being different grades and should put a little weight on recommendations or ECs but only when comparing kids in the same bucket. I have no dog in this fight. My kids at 1250 and 1450 -- not Ivy. But people actually think this is fair -- I don't get it. Maybe he worked to get so smart or maybe he was born that way ---- doesn't even matter to me. This isn't a job interview. It is selection into an academic program - why should it be based on this. I am disgusted but wish him well.

Yep. DC has similar stats and disadvantages (asian male) as the kid in the video. We adviced against applying to the Ivies. He did apply to a couple and rejected. Rejected at top state schools as well. If you are going to chime in with "what about ECs?" save your breath. Not going to get into the details but he had plenty to account for leadership, well roundedness and pointiness..

Deciding between UMich and UVA. We are letting him decide. Let me address the obvious follow on question about "top state schools" in my original comment. I meant top Engr/CS schools (Berkeley, Georgia tech and UIUC).

I agree. It’s truly sad when someone doesn’t recognize that it’s never been a meritocracy. It’s truly sad when someone doesn’t do their due diligence and understand what their competition looks like.
It’s even sadder if this post was put up by a disaffected adult, exposing this kid to derision due to his spelling errors. I wish him well with his options.
If this kid has thousands of followers - pretty sure he is ok with exposing his spelling errors.

+1. For as much time as people spend on these college forums, when will they understand that admission is about more than stats. The tips schools could fill their classes with perfect stats kids several times over? Thanks It’s a lottery among high stats and people with unique accomplishments once the sports and legacy spots are filled.
Was basically coming to post exactly this. And many, many of the people with "perfect" stats didn't get there via meritocracy. They got there via tutors and test retakes and schools that juice GPAs, etc. Some did it on their own, but many (most) did not. This country has never been a meritocracy when it comes to college admissions -- it's always been based on other factors. It's weird to me to watch all these people get up in arms about affirmative action and holistic admissions as though these schools have not ALWAYS engaged in some version of it.

There are top LACs where the % of asians is below the general population, rendering them URMs. Look at the common data sets of them and find out which ones. You will get a benefit especially if ED.
What are these rates please and where. You are the one posting this. What is the data?
