I love it! Neighbors are chill. It's close to DC. Downtown is on the upswing.

There are other pools not too far away, it's just sad that the PG Pool is in Mt R but no one who moves here can join it. It's not their fault! It's an ongoing joke among new families here, comparing how many decades you have left on the wait list.

The private swim clubs in the area have a long waitlist. There are a lot of members who drive in from DC. For example, Capitol Hill people make up ~50% of Cheverly pool's membership. The waitlist is 5+ years long.

Sometimes I look at my place on the waitlist just to feel sad. Another good technique is to walk by on the way home from the Metro when it's really hot and hear the happy people splashing about.

yes that's accurate. it's also young families headed by non-profit staffers without the family wealth necessary to buy in Takoma these days.

Whatever, there's plenty of family wealth in Mt Rainier. There's family wealth everywhere! And families "headed" by non-profit staffers haven't been able to afford Takoma Park for decades.

Mt Rainier has been a pretty diverse place for a long time now. It was a sundown town before it was mostly black, and now it is fairly balanced as places go. Ime there’s some resentment about rising prices and taxes but it’s not the same as the “gentrification” conversations happening elsewhere in the area. It’s nuanced. Places are complicated.

I will say that Mt Rainier is extremely friendly. It’s pretty nuts. If you take a walk, you’re going to chat with several neighbors.
