Excellent school. Easier to get into than Columbia, but school competitive. In my NY HS, girls who were top of the class and did well but not phenomenally on SATs applied and got in there. Also know people who had great test scores from less competitive high schools who ended up there. Excellent school, bright students, and Columbia social network. I actually always found it unfair that such a great school is female only!

It’s easier to get into than Columbia. Decades after being the actual women’s component of Columbia, it seems to retain some weird affiliation or semi-affiliation. Obviously, some people will try to portray things as they wish.

Look, I grew up in New York and a classmate who was accepted just bragged about getting into Barnard. That was enough. We all knew that it was the women's college affiliated with Columbia. She bought a Barnard sweatshirt, not a Columbia sweatshirt.

Columbia students will immediately lose respect for any Barnard students/alums who describe themselves as Columbia students/alums first. It's simply a strange relationship, and the thinking is that they should be proud of their institution separate from Columbia.

I believe the main reason that Barnard is easier to get into than Columbia is that fewer students want to go to a single-sex school. We could not get my daughter to apply there this year, even though Barnard shares classes with Columbia, which is located right across the street. (Fortunately, she was accepted at Columbia.)

My impression is that security is stricter at Barnard than Columbia, though both campuses are quite safe. Several people have told me that Barnard has nicer dorms and better food than Columbia.

My Barnard diploma says Columbia University and underneath Barnard College. Yes, It is an undergraduate school of the university just like the engineering school, the school of general studies and Columbia College.

It's confusing. Some said it's part of Columbia like Fu school of engineering being part of Columbia, and some said it's not. Are there any examples of this kind of arrangement in other universities?

Barnard is very much part of Columbia University. As a student at Barnard, I took many classes at Columbia College and one class at one of Columbia’s graduate schools. I lived one year in a Columbia College dorm and another year in a Barnard dorm that had Columbia College students living in it. I studied in all the libraries on the university campus - BC, CC, and graduate school libraries. Had friends from BC, CC and the School of Engineering.
