It reflects the Mayor’s attitude regarding public schools if she doesn’t require her most senior staff in charge of DCPS to send their kids to DCPS.

Is your spouse in a high-profile leadership position where the choices they make affect tons of public school kids? If not, I think you're fine. If so...yeah, it's not good to be doing that without some skin in the game. It's not a criticism of the person's family. Maybe his wife is making the choices, but if he couldn't even convince her that public schools were sufficient for their kids, what does that say?


It’s not so much skin in the game but that he should be held accountable for lying to the public about the risks of in person school. clearly he doesn’t believe that. He needs to be held accountable.

Um, me? We have happily chosen public over private — happily until this year, at least. I am now thinking it won’t work after elementary school because of what Covid has shown me and because of the direction Wilson is heading.

If your spouse is high enough up that they are directly responsible for policies related to public education it should be a condition of employment. Just like living in DC is a condition once you reach a certain salary threshold ($150k.) if your spouse is the finger printer at DCPS he gets a pass. I used to live near a labor union employee who has signs posted in the front yard about public school teachers rights who sent their kids to privates schools. There is a degree of commitment when you walk the walk and not just talk.


Edited to add, I am also sure there are probably plenty of qualified people to do their jobs who do send their kids to public schools. If their employment was dependent on sending your kids to public schools, would you?

I'm the troll, and I can't stand the WTU. We're leaving DCPS after this school year, 8 years in. But the harsh reality is that we all chose to enroll our children in public schools in a city where Mayor control of education is the rule. Bowser has almost total control our the District's ed sector l and she appointed a Deputy Mayor who sends his kid to private school. I'm not impressed with her anymore than I am with him, the WTU, OSSE, or DCPS as a whole.


The sad truth is I can’t think of anyone to be impressed by in the entire city government.
