The trouble with VA beach is it doesn't pair with any other team/location. It's a pain to go 4 hrs to VA beach for one game, and although I expect they are used to it, ECNL travel would be a nightmare for a VA beach team.

This is correct. ECNL will be adding more teams in VA and Maryland next year.
I'd put Beach FC in ECNL if they'd want to do it. Rather go there than Raleigh or Charlotte. Who else is around that we don't already play? The leagues may change, but it's still the same kids from the same places. I don't want to drive to Columbus or Pittsburgh or NYC every weekend.
Ah - but that's not the point of ECNL - or at least it's not supposed to be. ECNL is supposed to be about driving as far as necessary to play good teams. I don't particularly want to drive a long way - but I'd rather drive 4 hours to play a good team than 2.5 for a waste of time.
I'm making a general point here, so I'm not going to comment specifically on whether or not I consider Beach a waste of time.
Yes that makes sense. It's just a long way we go for a lot of travel soccer, but that is a good thing in some ways. A place like DC has a high population and a lot of talent. Talent doesn't always make the team though. Competition can take many forms. You can play a lesser talented team 5 hours away, but if they can play a low block well, you might be lucky to win 1-0. Did your players learn anything? Maybe some did. I see "players" in most of the teams we face. There is usually one who I'm like "damn, wish we had him on our team.". That is the cool part though. There are other kids outside of DC who can play, but if we sit in the bubble then we don't see what else is out there. Not just players, but styles of play. You can have an ECNL league in NOVA and MD alone, but you might be trapped in a certain play style that only works here.
