I was listening to the Yale Admissions podcast and the admissions officer was saying that somewhere in his region, he drove by a big, lit up billboard sign by the high school bragging about one of the kids whom he had admitted getting in, and he talked about how much they hate when high schools do that.

Our HS does that too. It's not the best school, but has a few kids going to the elites each year. This year, the top 2 are going to Harvard and Brown and you see it on display all over the place. I get that it raises the profile of the school and that matters a lot for the administration, but the top schools don't like it.

I realize this is a slightly different topic; just sharing.

not so, some kids really want to go away and only come back for holidays and experience OOS ... merit at Pitt is very good

My kid chose Pitt over UMD for exactly those reasons. So many kids from her HS going to UMD, and she wanted to branch out some. The schools are close enough academically that for us other considerations were much more important. She really liked the urban campus as well.

Hmmm. My son was accepted but did not get a sign. I’m not an aHole like many in here. I’d put it up.

...sorry and your point is....?

My point is they send swag lots of people who are not necesarily attending..what was confusing for you?

Your poor writing.

I don't understand the anger; it's a marketing thing, and these schools have tons of extra money that they didn't have to spend on graduation ceremonies and won't be spending on "accepted students" programming this year. If your kid doesn't appreciate the sign, fine. Move on.
