To the K dropout parent, do not let anyone make you feel bad. Your child will begin 1st grade and you'll take it from there. I'm in a situation where I have to go out to work and hope that my MS and HS kids are learning online. Some days yes and some days no but it is what it is.

I listened to Brabrand say on multiple town halls that video of classes would be posted so that kids in families who don't have a set up that accommodates attendance during regular hours for whatever reason could access the videos at a time that worked. ONE of my kids' teachers posts videos, the rest don't. Following through with that could have vastly helped parents like pp. This is definitely not on PP. Do you expect her to quit her job and sit with her kid during work hours?

I didn't know they were supposed to do that. Not only don't we have videos, but even the slideshows they use to teach the class are not made available once the class is over. If I don't run over in time and make a copy of the slideshow and then save it to the hard drive, we never see it again. And sometimes there are multiple slideshows or links to online sites, and I can't possibly keep track of all them, and it's all gone when class is over. Worse, even with the slideshow, the classwork is designed so that if you're not there and paying attention and participating 100% the entire time, every single day, you can't make heads or tails of what is on the slideshow and can't do any of the assignments.

My kid missed one PE class for a dr appt, but that’s it.

We haven’t missed a day yet. I try to schedule doctor appts on student holidays.

We miss probably a day a month. Generally we check in for attendance and explain to the teacher we’re going on a field trip. Teacher says have fun. November we took the week of Thanksgiving off so she missed 2 days. All in all we probably miss may 3 days per quarter. Which is generally normal for us.

About once a week I get a call that one of my two kids missed a period (usually they fell asleep and didn't log on, or logged off early, or whatever). I don't encourage it, but don't sweat it either. They do make up the work. We have gone on trips. One week at the beach, and they were online for every class. Another to the mountains, where we were traveling back on a school day, so they missed two periods when we had no connectivity. Again, they made up the work, so I am not too concerned. One MS and one HS.

I can only speak for our family but, our school didn't teach any information in the spring. Our kids had 1-2 hours per week with the teacher and it was all show-and-tell blah blah blah. No assignments, no google slides, etc. So we didn't know what FCPS's idea of virtual school looked like. We had NO IDEA that they would spend a summer and all that extra training time and that it would still be so awful and not age appropriate at all. I expected to be assigned books, workbooks, supplies for science, etc! Our school has given us nothing. We can't even check books out from the library.

education is a priority to me too, but only when delivered in a developmentally appropriate format for early ES age.

We actively skip chunks of the day. And I let them choose if they want to do art or PE on a given day. We fill that time with reading or math practice.

No one needs that much screen time and it helps keep them fresh for their core subjects.

We attend about 30 minutes a day and have since the beginning. We value education too much to put our kids through hours of zoom (which isn’t effective education).

No one has said boo yet. We have a tutor and are essentially homeschooling but the school doesn’t know that. You will be fine for a family trip.

We’ve had a few appointments that she needed to sign out early for. Every once in a while she’ll have a day where she just refuses to attend. And there are chunks of each day that she’s logged in but nowhere near the iPad. i’d say she attends 75% of the time but at least a part of most days. When she can complete a full day without a battle, or needing extra long breaks, I’m a bit in shock.

I think three days would be more appropriate for her age. it’s too hard to be good and in meetings all week. We are looking forward to the hybrid split for variety. Kindergarten. APS

That said I wouldn’t plan a trip unless it was connected to a long weekend. It is still supposed to be school. It would have to be an insanely important need for family or employment or once in a lifetime opportunity… And travel right now is really not smart so it would be weighed with that as well.

Yes, our family also prioritizes education, when it is offered. This year has been a waste of time.
