All this back and forth is pointless. Schools are in session. It is done. WTU needs to stop being obstructionists. As schools continue inperson successfully, resentment will build between IP teaching staff and virtual.

The vaccine does not offer even 60% immunity to the South African variant. It has already been found in Baltimore and Montgomery County, MD.

You will see European schools fully reopening before DCPS. They won’t allow what we did to happen.

You also need to read up on the vaccines. Even against the “foreign” variants they prevented deaths 100%.

Also, European schools are not universally closed even during this lockdown.

The vaccines that were used in trials in South Africa, with the new variant, resulted in zero cases of hospitalization or death. Zero. This virus is never going away and these vaccines will allow us to live with it. The news is good.

+1

60% immunity with enough people vaccinated is great.

Again with the not knowing how to understand science

Also Europe’s vaccine rollout hasn’t been going that well leaving them with fewer options.

There should be a right to strike. Otherwise we're not living in a free society that protects workers' rights.

Also, it won't make one lick of difference to the quality of instruction anyway. We're providing in-person face-to-face instruction for the majority of the student body any time soon. Our cases, hospitalizations and deaths are just too high.

If we were truly living in a “free society”, half the teachers in the country would have not been paid for the last year since they haven’t done their jobs. And they’d now be looking for other jobs (probably without success) since most of them could have been replaced during the past year.

This is really unkind to teachers. Just because DL is an ineffective way to teach doesn’t mean it’s their fault that we need to do DL in the first place.
Also, there’s absolutely no one looking to replace teachers. DCPS is always hiring.

What are you talking about? Having DL last March wasn't in any way the WTU teachers fault and they were heros for pivoting as quickly as they did, but they are fully responsible for everything since August. Their strategy during all those months when other places were holding school with lower community spread and good weather to use the outdoors was scorched earth rather than finding ways to educate in person. They are the reason for full DL this school year.

The entire pandemic has been "wait and see" so far with respect to DMV schools. We can't just stay in an indefinite standstill. We need to adapt. Closures might happen, but that doesn't mean we don't try and open with appropriate the various risk-reduction protocols being put into place.

Also, my reading of the news suggests that England is attempting to reopen schools in early March, and that opening schools will be the top priority.

The WTU have taken advantage of a horrible situation - the pandemic - at the price of children. A serious lack of ethics and basic decency.

we need to elect fewer extreme liberals on council and get the WTU under control. I am not saying we shouldnt have a union but they are acting absurd. I am glad the Mayor attempted to stand up to them (even if it backfired last fall).

I wonder what the teachers feel DCPS isn’t doing to ensure safety?

If we were living in a real “free society” we would it have public subsidized schools. You also would have been fired for your less than full blast work product during this pandemic. Not sure how these types of comments really help the dialogue. But continue to rant

Yes teachers totally did this. It wasn’t at all a global pandemic and terrible federal response.
you know nothing about the quality of our work products. we do know something about the quality of teacher work.

I know in a free society most companies would not hire women and especially mothers. So there’s that.

The main thing that allows women to be hired in our society is that we know all the kids will be going to school and so there's no need for childcare. By changing the rules on this, teachers around the country have put us back 50 years. Now employers look at women and think of them as childcare providers again, when we'd just gotten rid of that label.
