You're right. I saw firsthand the damage in another house in that neighborhood from that July 2019 storm - in the house that I saw, if there had been someone sleeping in the basement bedroom, I'm not sure they would have survived the huge rush of high flood waters.

It seems reckless to rent it advertising the basement bedrooms. Somebody could drown sleeping in the basement if you get another massive flash flood.

If I recall correctly, there was some mention in the various pleas for help of lost income from the basement. I was kind of floored the person expected their neighbors to cover that.

This is truly baffling. The WTOP article says she is a 38 (then) single mom. LinkedIn is nothing special, maybe $160k (I mean does Booz and such pay that well)?

No wonder she was freaking out, she must have stretched like crazy to get into that house. And now she can never escape it. And she clearly has to move, otherwise why rent it out.

Wow...I remember this person now. Yeah, that house isn’t selling. Rainstorms are getting more and more severe every year, and the water is going to go where it has always gone.

The flooding MIGHT get fixed. Arlington is building some huge stormwater storage tanks underneath the Reed School site. That might help things. Plus the owner probably spent a significant sum of money on water mitigation.

So the chances of similar flooding in the future are really low. Even still, 1.4 million is still way too high. I think if the house was maybe 3 blocks further from the center of Westover it could get 1.3 million easy.

Massive flooding in all of Arlington 2 summers ago. Kirby Road in Mclean was closed forever due to road erosion. It was something that hadn’t happened in over 40 years.
