How do you find retired breeding dogs?

I was about to post this . One of the comments noted there are plenty of dogs available in NJ shelters.

NP. I adopted a dog in November from a NJ rescue (gets dogs from NYC). I got an Adopt-a-Pet email with a lot of available dogs, emailed, they responded the next day, and then the day after I drove to NJ, met her, got approved and took her home. She has adjusted very well and we are happy.

I wanted to add for anyone else that is looking, we had a great experience with the Fairfax County Animal Shelter. We had a hard time with a couple of rescue groups and didn’t know if we would ever be approved. They were easy to work with and we are very happy with our new addition to the family. We have older kids and they were happy to answer my questions and didn’t automatically turn us down because of the children.

So glad OP! Congratulations. It can be hard to get "in" with a rescue, but now you will be ready when the right dog comes along. Good luck and report back when you bring your new family member home. As a person whose spouse is iffy on pets and who never had a dog of her own until a few years ago, I can tell you that our dog has changed our lives in ways I could never have imagined and brought us smiles, intense love, and laughter day after day. Sure, there are tough times, sickness, accidents, vet bills, etc. Worth every penny!

Thanks again everyone! Great tips and angles I hadn't considered. I think one thing that will make this take longer for us is that we are new dog owners and I don't really have the confidence to quickly assess a dog I've just met in a shelter. So I think we will hold out for one that has been fostered or at least assessed over a period. That means it will be a long, long time, I'm sure, but we'll keep trying! Thanks again!

If you can drive to North Carolina/South Carolina the shelters are full -- that is where many of the local rescue groups get dogs. You do have to be fairly confident in your ability to assess a dog.

I would also recommend being a foster -- it's a great way to honestly assess how a dog would fit into your life, see what type of activity level you are comfortable with, etc. Dogs get adopted quickly, so you typically don't foster for very long. I've done it for Lucky Dog, and once you get approved (and you can get pre-approved to be an adopter at the same time), fostering is easy.
