I'm one of the PPs who would be fine with a small, masked, outdoor party. No eating.

Part of why you'll get no sympathy is that, as it's been almost a year, most of us have kids who didn't get birthday parties. You can celebrate at home, no guests. It's fine, I promise. My kid is young so we got a helium tank and a bunch of balloons -- and it made her day. Other friends got special food and a movie, or a bigger gift than usual. (Certainly many kids got nothing special and they were also fine.)

My 7 year old understands why we didn't have a party. If your kid is old enough to notice the party they are old enough to understand why this year is different.

Op here. We attended a stop by and pick up a cupcake party. Maybe we will do something similar. I can hand out hot chocolate and cupcakes.

I've always assumed it was the parents that wouldn't do things when it is slightly cold, not the kids.

Op here. I am one of those parents who do not like cold. I just told DH maybe we should have an ice skating party. DD has never been ice skating but likes the idea of it.

That is a fine idea in normal times, but with COVID restrictions you may not be able to get a block of tickets at one time. Unless you're way out in the burbs. And I'd take her skating once in advance to get her over the hump, it's not fun to fall down a million times at a party.

Really, maybe get over the idea that a kid needs a "wow" birthday party right now. S'mores and playground time is a great party. You can get some of those little ski hand-warmer things for the adults if you're concerned about the cold. Or bring a big thermos full of coffee.
