I agree with the poster that said you should find another home for this dog if you plan to have children. It would probably be OK for the first year but as soon as your kid is mobile.... You really need a bullet proof dog with toddlers. Toddlers are fast and move in ways that can catch a dog off guard.

I also think the dog was in some sort of pain as OP reported that it squealed before it but her. This may have been an indication that it was hurt. A normal dog does not suddenly bite even if it is upset, first it growls, then it snaps. Dogs being reactive towards other dogs does not mean they are aggressive.

I have an aggressive dog (which I was given because my situation allows me to have a dog like this). She bit in "trigger" situations. I've had her for 4 years now. If she bit me and drew blood, in a situation which wasn't one of her triggers, while I leaned over her (which by the way I do every day when I pick up dog poop while she's on a short leash)... .I can't imagine what I'd do. I don't think I could trust or feel safe with her. I love her dearly and would probably put her down- too many situation where this could be a real issue.

Just yesterday we were out for a walk in the neighborhood and a random ~4 year old ran out of his yard and straight at her yelling "doggie". While I almost had a heart attack, she luckily just stood completely still and I was able to remove her - but you never know. Also, she has had several medical procedures where I have had to do unpleasant rehab/wound care on her. I can't imagine how bad it would be if I was worried the whole time about her biting me.

If you adopted a dog with known aggression issues and it is documented you would be wise to have an umbrella insurance policy with a rider for the dog to cover you for when she bites someone else. Your current homeowners won’t cover a dog bite if you knew the dog was aggressive when you got it.

As long as the dog just bites you it will be fine and the dog can have a long life. Just keep it away from other living organisms.
