There are rankings and there is social prestige....not the same thing.


Social prestige is based on ranking as it is included in it.
Anyone who thinks BC is more prestigious than Emory is just delusional.


Emory isn't prestigious in any regard though.

BU is the exact opposite of prestigious. Northeastern has eclipsed it as the large private uni for dummies in Boston.


I normally get upset about mean-spirited posts, but this one made me laugh out loud. Kind of agree. Would not be thrilled with my kids going to BU or northeastern. (Esp Northeastern)

I'd definitely encourage them to apply to Georgetown, Emory, and BC.
I think of those three, Georgetown is the most prestigious. I think it is just below HYPS/MIT/Caltech and somewhere around Penn, Dartmouth.
Next I would say Emory, which I think is better than Vanderbilt and worse than Duke. Maybe on par with UNC or Michigan, leading that pack.
I'd say BC is at the bottom, but in my mind it is a good school and I would be happy with my kid going there. My DD id not a senior yet, but out of the three would probably only apply to BC because she likes cold weather.

I still wouldn't put Mich or UNC on that level, or any public school other than UCB. But regardless the OP wants to know if BC is Emory lite and it is. If you get into Emory, BC is a safety. If you get into BC , Emory is still a Reach. The idea of BC being more socially prestigious is preposterous. BC have never been a top 30 school, it would be different if it was like Emory and Georgetown whom beat each other in the rankings every now and then. The debate makes more sense in that case.(Although Emory seems to win more often).

Southern school in an "urban" city brings out the trolls. Most of DC'ers children went to UVA, Umich, Tufts and UMD. Objectively worse schools so they're probably just jealous.


Tufts? Nothing like the other three schools mentioned.

So maybe instead of looking for prestige, figure out where your kid would be happiest.


I can see this. There is definitely some overlap in applicants, but GU is significantly more diverse and liberal than BC. I can't really see Emory appealing to applicants of either GU/BC.

There are plenty of things about Emory that ARE just as good as Stanford. Both are great schools with lots of bright students.

OP, if you want to look at outcomes, consider by field and location. But, there are enough differences among the three that it seems likely your D would have a preference based on factors more likely to distinguish each from the others.
