A few years ago I sked myself the same question. I am an attorney who works in Manhattan for a liberal organization, but the lawyers who live on Long Island are almost all Republican. The answer that I came up with is that Long Island was largely populated as part of something called "white flight" where the white people wanted to get away from areas which were diversifying. This started a generation or 2 ago, but these people inculcated their children in their values and it carried down from generation to generation.

I really disagree with the white flight statement. True, LI's population is founded primarily on immigrant based escapees from the boroughs, but it was all part of that post-WW2 expansion. Moving to LI was a sign of moving up in the world.

Yup. And adherence to religion, particularly right to life. They think liberals are an anathema to what's righteous and sacred.

No problem with abusing children at church, though.

That’s a low blow and unfair.

Correct.

Fox lies to them about scary brown people, so that the Murdoch family can get their votes.

The billionaires pick their pockets, and blue collar people don’t know because they believe lies from rightwing media.

Just as in 1930s Germany, either we fix the propaganda and lies in our news media, or Murdoch/Goebbels will lead us into another meltdown.

Dig a little and it is amazing the conspiracy theories being lapped up on LI. I thought it was probably just a racist archie bunker type driving the trumpers on LI but after a few drinks.... wow...the alternate reality emerges.

Have you people been to Suffolk County ? The majority of Suffolk residents live in west Suffolk and commute to the city for work. They’re transplants or kids of transplants from Brooklyn and Queens. They voted for Trump because they know Biden is a corrupt politician. Street smart people.

Okay. So 30 hours per week they're in their cubicles in Manhattan and the rest of their lives they're on an island detached from the mainland US.

Looks like they are right. Lol.

Insular and isolated... one could say the same about the coasts.

Except people who actually study geography and sociology don't say this about urban centers that are connected to other urban centers.

Lots of NYPD and FDNY live on Long Island. That’s a factor.

That is hilarious. Trump played them.

interesting that the wealthy would be Dems, a party that raises taxes on the wealthy, and middle class would be Rs, a party that lowers taxes for the wealthy.

Aspirational thinking is powerful; that is a huge part of the Trump appeal.

Lots of good reasons on this thread. I think the white flight from brooklyn and queens probably explains the most, but all are factors.

Note that LI has become less republican over time. The children of white flight may be a little less republican.
