DD 2ND Grade teacher plays music for movement breaks and after long breaks she blares the music to let the kids know its time to return. And she's given them reward videos. I don't see a problem with it. She's trying to liven up the class. Calm down. One Taylor Swift video did not dumb your kid.

Reading teachers often use lyrics, and hearing the spoken words can be part of that. Reading is thinking, by the way. You can't read if you can't think and comprehend. Learning about differing types of writing...hence reading material..is important. Imagery, metaphors, figurative language etc., are often found in lyrics.

I don’t even know what is going on in my kids 4th grade class... just as it would be in school. I have no issue with TS or kissing video and I was overprotective of my kids with media when they were younger. By age 9 my husband and I probably have more passionate kisses in the kitchen that my kid has seen than in a TS video. What do you want your kid to not understand sexuality?

Being able to interpret visual culture around them is even built into standards--it's part of media literacy which is part of language arts. This has been the case for 30 years. It helps situate understanding of words and texts.

I don’t think it’s a troll post. Enough of us have said we do this in our classes and Pps remember their teachers doing it to show it isn’t unusual. It’s actually such a common teaching strategy that it’s very believable it happened. OP just didn’t realize she was gonna stand alone on this one. But you know you’re wrong when a board that loves to dump on teachers isn’t on your side.

It’s been explained multiple times how this is actually a strategy to introduce practice reading skills. You don’t want to hear it. I would love for you to email school officials. The teacher will only look good and you’ll reveal yourself to be the problem parent you are.

I was going to say, in my HS literature class, we extensively studied rap music, especially Tupac. Parents are so out of touch. Teachers try to make learning relevant to children and they freak out. This is a sign of a good teacher, op. OP your upper elementary student knows what a kiss is. Now is where your parenting should come in and you talk about normal bodily functions. Talk about healthy relationships to your child. This is a learning opportunity
