I think they have convinced him that everything HE thinks is helpful to the campaign (i.e., joy ride, huffing and puffing after the stair climb) is backfiring HUGELY. So someone has probably told him to back off.
I'm in the union (on the national level) of the people who did the behind the scenes work for setting up for the Presidential debate. On Friday morning after Trump's news came out the president of our union sent out an email that said, "... And now, any one of Trump’s several in-person speaking engagements this week, including Tuesday’s debate, potentially exposed more of our sisters and brothers to this deadly virus.
The President of the United States should not be a workplace hazard."
