I don’t even own a bike but as someone who wants to be able to walk around my own damn neighborhood without feeling a constant low level dread of being hurt or killed by an impatient, distracted or aggressive driver.... I could not possibly have less sympathy for your big baby whining about being “inconvenienced”. Suck it up buttercup, they’re legally allowed to be on the road and they don’t care about your precious feelings. Someone choosing to pilot a climate controlled 5000 lb metal tank that has the power to kill everyone outside it on public roads is whining that they’ll get to their destination in 12.5 min instead of 11 min? No one else considers that a huge public crisis, sorry!

You all are going to have to make up your mind here. The OP wants cyclists to obey all the rules. Fine. But you want cyclists to pull over to allow cars to pass, when cyclists are allowed to be on the roads, and take the lane.

So cyclists should obey the rules, except when obeying the rules slows down cars, in which case they should *not* obey the rules, and defer to cars.

That's not a particularly tenable position.

Does it count as obeying the rules if the cyclist is going 20 mph in a 45 mph zone? and putting hundreds of lives in jeopardy?

How is it putting hundreds of lives in jeopardy to make people drive 20 in a 45? Is your car wired like the bus in “Speed” so it’ll explode if it doesn’t go fast enough? The only thing that’s happening to the hundreds of lives slowed down in your ridiculous hypothetical is that they’ll be briefly inconvenienced until they pass the cyclist, which, if experience is any guide, they’ll do without leaving the legally required three feet of space to the side as they go by.

As a cyclist/driver/pedestrian/human, I have no patience for people who advocate running down or shooting people, period. I get it, some cyclist ride like entitled a-holes. Some drivers drive like entitled a-holes. Most members of both groups follow most of the rules and generally act safely. This us/them attitude helps nobody. Roads are public goods, which means they need to be shared and governed by sensible, enforced rules.

You realize 45 is a maximum, not a minimum, right?

is anyone following the rules in DC? you see more and more cars running red lights, stop signs. It is a free for all out there. So complaining about bikes, who do not require a drivers license to ride, seem humorous at best.

Are you suggesting pedestrians carry guns to defend themselves? I’ve known two people (usually fairly normal off cycle) crash and seriously hurt themselves and the pedestrians they ran over.

Not at all. I don't think guns play any role in it and would help nothing other than stoking the egos of wannabe tough guys.

If I'm walking in a crosswalk and someone on a bike is coming at me, I wouldn't be worried about protecting myself. A stiff arm? A bag? I don't really know. That said, I'm far more worried about someone driving a car who is endangering me. It happens far more often and would hurt me a lot more if hit. And I have no real way of defending myself.

It's one reason I support speed governors on cars. 20mph limit is ok for downtown DC.

What's really happening here is that you notice the bicyclists who don't follow the rules because they bother you; you don't notice the ones who do, and you also don't notice the many drivers who don't follow the rules, either, because you're totally used to it.
