Looking around in that range, it seems to me that Notre Dame cares more about GPA than scores, and being need-blind, full pay won't help - can anyone confirm?

To the PPs discussing Rice, per Naviance Rice admits fewer kids than HYPS from our private high school out west. Same for Duke and Northwestern.

Her scores are great, and many students will have no scores at all.

Example: I started a thread asking if maybe my son could take some kind of online test, like the online SATs, and use that as an SAT substitute.

So, anyhow, I think your daughter should simply apply to a wide range of schools, including her dream schools, affordable in-state public flagship-level schools, and financial safeties, and see what happens.

The same would be true if she had all 800s. Yale might be about as much a lottery for a student with all 800s as it would be for your daughter.

True but they are probably CS or similar. OP's kid hasn't specified a major.

Big money merit aids are not major specific. Department schloarships are but very small amount.

If her counselor thinks her "choice schools" are still a reach, did the counselor also help her identify match and likely schools? As long as she has some affordable choices that she likes and which are likely to admit her, why not go ahead and apply to the "choice schools" with the 1490? Also, does she have any preferences about schools other than "the best school that she can get in to"?

My DS had the same score (also got a 34 ACT) and the most selective school he applied to was UMD (but he had his own priorities and a few B+ grades on his transcript).

My MCPS magnet kid with a 1560 and 4.8 weighted GPA got $5k/year from UMD.
