If the true purpose of TJ is to provide a strong STEM focused education, then the school should be lottery based. I’m not sure it should be based on a test or high gpa. All kids should have the same opportunities to go there. The 3.5 GPA cutoff seems like a good cutoff for lottery kids.

It will most likely no longer continue to be a top 10 high school, but that is ok.

After all these discussions, I started to wonder what the real purpose of TJ is supposed to be. I went looking and I found it defined on http://www.doe.virginia.gov/instruction/governors_school_programs/:

Governor's Schools give gifted students academic and visual and performing arts opportunities beyond those normally available in the students' home schools. Students are able to focus on a specific area of intellectual or artistic strength and interest and to study in a way that best suits the gifted learner's needs. For example, small-group instruction, hands-on-experiences, research, field studies, or realistic or artistic productions are major elements in the instructional design at all schools. I don't see how a lottery system with quotas per region fit into this description. I agree that there are improvements that can be done in the elementary and middle schools to prepare more people, including minorities, for STEM and encourage more of them to apply to TJ. When striving for equality, it is better to raise from the bottom instead of trying to chop off the top.

Nobody has an issue with the white people who are accepting of all races. The issue is with the part of the white population who are not, and if you just look at current events, that's a sizable population. This is not a political discussion so I'll leave it at that.

This is sad, there are highly intelligent people of every race. Maybe this lottery is a blessing in disguise. Don’t sweat it.

I strongly suspect that if an Asian were to apply firm engineering principles to the problem of inadequate diversity in TJ and AAP, and come up with a brilliant and effective solution which still respects the nature of the program, nobody on the school board would listen to her idea because she's Asian.

As an Asian, I am really surprised by how open USA is to all the races. Genuinely, I appreciate that so many whites are so accepting of all races.

I find all this race baiting really sad.

As an Asian, I am offended by what was mentioned above.

I dont think anyone of any color is better or worse than other. It is just a matter of priorities. Plenty of really smart, insanely smart kids in every race when I went to college.

Some Asians tend to prioritize academics to an extreme degree. Possible not good for kids. Not all Asians like that. I have a close friend who is White and he out "Asians" my kid. That kid is extremely smart and both his parents are Phd's and they do so many things. That kid is still in 7th grade and I always that he would have been a great fit at TJ.

Sometimes you have to just go with the flow and be careful what you wish for. We cannot control EVERY aspect of our childrens’ lives. This is life, have you just realized that life isn’t always fair?

I do not support the lottery. That is insane.

I have a kid and he would have taken the TJ test just to try it out. We have absolutely no intention of attending.

Most of the kids in TJ end up being loners with few friends. Saw many kids in our neighborhood who went to TJ and we are not so keen on that.

Still, I think this is a very short sighted and rushed move. Dont see the hurry at all.

I think many of these kids will be so burned out in 10 years from the helicopter parents and nonstop prepping. Many kids, particularly boys, are late bloomers. In 10 years the proof will be in the pudding. I am old enough to have seen how this all plays out.
