A cousin gave us a wedding gift of a framed photo of himself and his (now ex) in-laws’ family dressed in old-time clothing in a saloon setting. I have never met these people.

MIL gave one of my kids a graduation present that came from a dollar store and worse yet, it was monogrammed with the initial of another grandchild.

I started this thread a year ago. My MIL is a very "creative" gift giver. The invitation from Jesus to attend church (we are agnostic) is still the best but there have been more since my post back then. I'll update later today when I have more time.

My MIL gave my husband one of these things for Christmas. He's a recovering alcoholic.

My sister is notorious for horrible, and sometimes mean-spirited, gifts.

The worst was one year she had beautifully wrapped boxes for my brother and I at Christmas. When we opened them up they were full of free "swag" she had gotten at a convention.

My adult stepdaughter is a runner-up. She gave me a pair of ugly, cheap, crap-brown slippers with HUGE white polka dots all over them which were a size 11. I wear a size 7 shoe which she is well aware of.

At least in my sister's example both my brother and I were able to point-blank ask her "WTF? Why are you giving us this free crap?" She said she figured we can always use pens and key rings.

In my SD's case I had to play nice for my DH and act like the Bozo slippers were SO THOUGHTFUL. Blech.

I must say I'm laughing at all the responses on here. They're hilarious.

I once gave a friend one of those fancy spa gift shop boxed soap sets that smell nice and are expensive. A week or two later her daughter pretended to be clueless and asked me if I could use some soaps. I was a little confused, but she brought out that box and offered them to me. I'm like, WTF. Apparently the soaps offended them but I honestly thought they were a nice little gift.

I had been babysitting full time for my sister for the previous year. I was making 250 a week. Sometimes I asked for a roll of toilet paper from her Costco supply only if I was absolutely broke. She never seemed to mind. That Christmas she drew my name out of the grab bag. It would have been a good opportunity to give me something nice to show appreciation for the loving and attentive care for her children. Instead she showed up at the family Christmas exchange with a 12 pack of toilet paper for me. Unwrapped.

Not a family member, but I have a friend who likes to "gift" her stuff that she doesn't want anymore on me. I've gotten:

- those cheap 'sexy' clothes (think Forever 21 style) in size XL. I'm a size small and a middle aged mother.

- a bag of lentils

- toys that her kid has broken

- 4 live chickens

Usually I just throw them in the trash but I had to draw a line at the chickens.

Her best gift was a set of used hair scrunches. No hair in them, so she must have washed them beforehand, but still.
