+1 to this - just learned of a friend with super high fever and ended up being lyme.

+1 I had lyme and the wrist and ankle joint pain was so bad I couldn't take a step without pain for weeks. I don't remember fever as the pain was all consuming

What an ordeal OP.

Thank you for updating us - you and your son are on my mind. It's really good that the doctors are collaborating on his care.

Hope you can manage to get a bit of rest.

Sorry to hear it OP. A friend's teen just spent several days in the hospital in similar circumstances. "Blood based bacterial infection" was all they could determine. All tests coming back negative. She came home in a few days. Never did hear of a definitive diagnosis.

I do wonder if it was Covid but the tests kept coming back negative.

The doctors have talked and at this point the people at children’s said to stay put where we are and they advised doctors here on more tests. Autoimmune, parasitic etc. his fevers are better controlled today so I’m feeling better. We are staying the night again, will update when I have more answers. Thanks for all the suggestions we have discussed most of them. Will update as I can

It is NOT rabies. These are NOT SIGNS OF RABIES

Anonymous wrote:I’ve been pretty calm but I’m starting to worry. He has a very high fever breaking through Advil and Tylenol, and ankle and knee pain making it hard for him to walk. We are in AA county in MD and they are transferring us to children’s in the am. Everything is coming up negative, covid/panels of respiratory viruses, MRI, chest X-ray, WBC count is normal but inflammatory markers are high. Awaiting Lyme and blood culture results in the am.

I’m not looking for a website diagnosis, I’m just worried and sleep deprived and never thought it would take this long to figure it out.

Kawasaki is likely. DEMAND an infectious disease specialist. Have them do a daily check of both inflammatory markers and platelets. Steadily rising platelets is a key. You have ten days to diagnose and treat with immunoglobulin and avoid damage to blood vessels. PLEASE DEMAND TESTING FOR KAWASAKI through an infectious disease specialist.

My son had it at 5, he's now 19 and in perfect health.

Came here to say this sound a lot like how my JRA started around age 7 (and I got nearly all of my care at Childrens). I'm a healthy 35 y/o mother of two now, if it's any comfort!

Has the child's throat been cultured? My DS often has joint pain with strep throat. Also consider Fifths Disease - viral syndrome that also often has joint pain. Sounds like he has a 'fever of unknown origin" which can take a while to work up and get diagnosed.

OP, thinking of you and your son. I had osteomyelitis and was hospitalized for a month when I was six -- and thinking about I cannot imagine how my mom got through it with my younger sister at home and my mom was pregnant with my youngest. I'm sure it's terrifying but please also try to take time to take care of yourself. I hope the doctors find an answer and it's something that can be taken care of quickly, but in case this turns out to be a marathon and not a sprint, you need to take care of yourself too so you can be there fully to advocate for your son.
