How many "X" names are there, anyway? I think if I was a girl with that name, I'd think it was cool because I'd be the only X kid.

Agreed, although there's diversity among the pronunciation of the X names. Ximena is hee-men-a, whereas I've heard the indigenous Mexican X pronounced as "sh."

Sorry. I missed the full question. We gave an Azteca friend with this name. No I would not use it as I’m not indigenous. I find it beautiful though.

I've been told to pronounce it So-ch'ill. It sounds like "so chill" with a very slight hiccup, obviously that's not the correct linguistic term, in the middle of chill.

The problem is that Xochitl will have to teach thousands of people over the course of her life how to pronounce it. What a nightmare. Don’t do this to an American kid.

God you are dramatic. I have a name that is difficult to pronounce and I often have to correct people (if they ask or if it's someone I interact with often, if it's the receptionist at my dentist office or something I don't say anything because I don't really care). I don't even think it's an inconvenience let alone a "nightmare."

FWIW, I know two Xochitls through work and went to high school with one (in a rural town in upstate New York). It's rare, and I do think many people will struggle with the pronunciation, but I don't think it's that unheard of.

One person’s pragmatic is another person’s dramatic, I guess.

So just to recap: Xochitl is an indigenous Mexican name-not a Spanish name. Makes sense that the rest of the Spanish-speaking world would not be familiar with its pronunciation.

Is it SO-chee?

I know someone who goes by Sochi; I don't know if that's the name she was given or if she has just Americanlized Xochitl. Americans would butcher this name, but that's not necessarily a reason to rule it out.
