W&M currently only has freshman on campus (and a handful of OAs etc.). We'll see how it goes when classes start Sept 8. One thing W&M is doing--for better or for worse--is shortening the semester (they started remote 1 week earlier in August and are finishing exams by Thanksgiving). Students are going to be so busy with classes (some Sat hours are scheduled) they won't have as much free time.

12:47 - Can you post your source on the low useage by JMU students of their covid app? You state few used it and their was zero enforcement. Are you a university employee that has access to this data?

Honestly...I think it's a horrible decision to send students home!
As for me....yeah, one kid's school (UMW) has 0 positive cases....of course they postponed move in to next week....so maybe my kid will be on campus a little longer :-0
My other kid is at VMI...and you'd think that due to its structure there would be 0 cases...and there was...until all cadets arrived...numbers are slowly but exponentially going up by the day. My son thinks he'll be home in a month.
UVA classes started already and off campus students have been there a couple weeks. There aren’t many in person classes.
VT seems to have some decent testing going on so hopefully they will get by.

JMU did not require a negative Covid from any students - not even the ones moving into the dorms. They claimed to have consulted with VA public health, but who ever thought this was going to work?
Their big plan was to rely on an app which would be triggered when you came onto campus. Then the user would have to answer questions before proceeding. Few used it and there was zero enforcement.
JMU also removed or blocked off seating in large classrooms, but then didn't limit the number of students in those classes. So students just sat next to each other on the floor.

I said it's horrible to send ALL students home....those who don't test positive and/or are not exposed should be allowed to remain on campus.

Strictly anecdotally, my son (who has been in Cville about a week now) advised that on balance, people are taking the controls pretty seriously. That does not mean that there is no socializing, just that people do not seem to be going about it in a stupid way. Probably a function, in part, of the fact that many of them have parents who are the type that freak out on this board.
