4/20 teachers at my elementary school retired early or resigned this summer. We have only filled one of the positions. The other three will be filled with long terms subs, if any can be found willing to sign up to do distance teaching/hybrid this year for $20 an hour.

I'm sure that is true of many essential worker teachers. But, three of my sixth grade son's teachers never did another thing after schools closed their doors in March. Two were great and did a ton. But, it is ridiculous that three did nothing at all. There is no way that they could have all had family emergencies or been on leave.

There is a difference between wanting schools to open with relevant safety precautions, and saying that people exposed to COVID should continue reporting to work (I don't think anyone advocates for that).

You would not have working hospitals in the hotspots if exposed people had to stay home. Most interstate travel quarantines also have some exemption for essential and/or critical workers.

I don't think it's clear where teachers fall, although I agree with you that it would be a mistake in this case. However, I can guarantee that there will not be a 100% consensus among parents about whether teachers should not stay in the classroom if one child gets sick, nor would there be 100% consensus that all the exposed kids should stay home until adequately screened negative (which takes a few days after exposure, at least, even with the best tests, because you won't shed it right away).

The bolded part is important (even though the latter point is BS, many many parents consider in person education to be superior as education, not as babysitting). Essential workers do not all have to show up in person every day if there are safer compromises. For instance, telemedicine.

Teachers, healthcare workers and other essential workers, are also parents and taxpayers. During a pandemic, under a corrupt and tyrannical government, these people can do what ever the hell they want to protect themselves and their families first. Will they receive necessary PPE, funding for portable HVAC units in every classroom and disinfectant products for every classroom?

2. all others who care about people's lives will ignore his directive and continue with following medical advice

So, in other words, nothing will change. Trump just likes to sound authoritative, and he knows his cult followers love to take direction from their cult leader. That's all this is about. The rest of us will just ignore and move one.

Exactly. I feel bad for the people living in states with Trumpster governors. However, even if they attempt this, the whole thing will fall apart within a month. Cases will once again skyrocket and pressure to close will mount. I'm glad to live in Massachusetts. Our Governor wants to open, but he's not insane. I have no doubt he would stamp out that nonsense about teaching while exposed but asymptomatic in a minute. We're trying to organize mobile testing units for schools. Hmmm....what would be helpful in this effort? I know! A functioning national government.
