Yes, I agree!! Shame on them. I’m just confused about how a single school district, especially a well regarded one, could not figure out a solution to this worldwide pandemic!
They had decent reopening Hybrid plans until the Friday teachers mtg with super smith in July. Union declared they would not teach in person, at all. For the rest of the calendar year.

There are major behavior problems here and kids know there are no consequences. Look at what another poster wrote about various behaviors. Most kids are great and follow the rules. There are always at least a few who will not follow rules, or are rude or violent. They will not wear masks. And teachers don’t trust there will be any consequences.
Schools that opened here, in EU, in Asia, only wear masks when not at their socially distanced desks. Many can wear shields or masks or both.

Seriously. The blame belongs with the federal government first and foremost. I don’t understand why people do not grasp this.
That’s incorrect.
mcPS public teachers union decided not to teach no matter what. They went in to the Friday mid July mtg with superintendent and said No. I blame them.
Then a couple weeks later a MoCo county level health officer and county exec tired twice to not allow any school to open in person, citing no data or anything real. I blame them.
Schools that had a choice and many good reopening plans, who threw them out the window due to DC city or MoCo county level politicians plans games or bullying or stalling. I blame them.

Oh yes. And doesn’t MCPS have strong science departments?? And what about the health departments? Could MCPS not have put those two departments together to address this pesky pandemic??

Schools are managed locally in the US.
Point being, if we had had a good federal response to the pandemic, we would be at the levels of these countries who are able to safely open schools. Instead of the pathetic mess we've found ourselves in, because of the flaccid response from the white house.
I’m about as anti-Trump as anybody, but the ship expecting a good federal response has sailed. It’s no secret what can be done to help control the virus (ex. distancing and mask wearing). Even without an adequate national response if more people took responsibility for basic mitigation I think we’d be better off.
