Yep, most people I know who have one daughter (or one son) stopped at one because the second IVF or adoption didn't work out.

I (Single Moms by Choice) and all the friends i can think of who have "just" one child did it because that is what I/they could afford.

Speaking for myself, I wish I had adopted a sibling group instead of a singleton the first time around. I can't afford another adoption.

Why is having a male child superior to having a female child?

You have NO IDEA if:
- The parents only intended to have one child.
- The parents tried to have more children, but struggled with infertility.
- The parents suffered pregnancy or infant loss.

It is NONE of your business, and is actually appalling that you think it is remotely appropriate to not only question this, but to post about it. Unbelievable.

A red flag for what, exactly? Not confirming to society’s expectations of the nuclear family? Deciding that they were satisfied with one child? Or having fertility issues that prevented them from expanding their family? What a rude comment.

My only child is a daughter which I guess is a shame because she can’t inherit the massive fortune we’ve built up. If only we had a male heir to carry on the legacy of my DH and I, two school teachers.

I know a few, but they are all from patriarchal cultural backgrounds and are mostly sad that their families don’t value their DDs. No one actually wishes their DD was a son instead. I have a friend who let her in-laws pressure her into aborting a girl during her first pregnancy and then she conceived a girl the second pregnancy as well. She and her DH moved away from his parents and went in to have two lovely girls.


Your friend is horrible for caving. That is unacceptable and her husband should have stuck up for her.
