DC currently has a 9% positivity rate and is trending in the wrong direction. Distance learning is a smart choice.

Schools are not opening because it is not safe to do so. Period. That other states have opened their schools, was their decision. We'll see how that goes. Rather safe than sorry.

I'm not buying that in-person learning in DC is untenable. What I am buying is that DCPS is a low-capacity and largely dysfunctional school system, where the teachers union, Mayor, OSSE and DCPS leaders can't get on the same page about re-opening schools, or much else, to save their lives.

-1000. yes Covid may be with us for a long time and we need to adapt and so on, but this does not mean opening schools when the number of cases is high. Trump supporting governors want to reopen schools in states like Florida and Georgia, where the number of cases is sky high. they clearly could not care less about the kids, their families and the teachers. schools were supposed to open in our area but then cases started going up after the lockdown ended and they are still too high for schools to reopen. my kids are at Deal and Wilson, schools with 1600-1800 kids where kids travel by bus and metro daily to and from home. teachers are right, schools cannot reopen in this situation. battling a worldwide pandemic is certainly not easy but the Trump administration failed spectacularly and we all are paying the price. too easy to put this on the shoulders of the teachers' union, the culprit is somewhere else.

Come on. DCPS doesn't have anywhere near the manpower to track down the high performing lost children of upper middle-class families during Covid. You could always file an application to homeschool, which you have a right to do.

Yes, OP. My DD will be in K and I'm heartbroken that she'll miss out on experiencing the year that supposedly sets kids up for a lifelong love of learning. She's content at home but not thriving in that wonderful way she did in preschool. She's aged out of day care otherwise we would absolutely be exploring in-person day care for the socialization and so we can work full-time (I'm an essential worker).

Sadly most of the privates for K and up are either waitlisted, out of our reach financially, or all virtual. So we are reluctantly going to try DCPS DL and hope we can get through it better than PK DL. If it's awful then we will likely withdraw her and do homeschooling.

We have to adapt, and keep moving the best we can while trying to minimize risk. It's time to think about what's best for our children rather than only thinking of those at risk. I truly love the people who think the US is as good as, if not better than the world, when dealing with this pandemic. The US is a laughing stock. They have opened because they can, mind you most schools are closed for the summer. The reaction in many parts of the US is a disappointing. I've looked in my crystal ball and it looks bad because very little is being done to stop the spread of COVID-19.
