Love my country my adopted homeland that has given me so much opportunity I could never have where I came from (Chile).

I love to celebrate our country’s birthday. It is beautiful.

If you're from Chile you should know this is not America's birthday in any way, shape, or form! Go back to the books, you missed out a lot on US history, perhaps they should not have given you citizenship. P.S I'm an immigrant too but took the time to learn about American history, Columbus (remember him), Native Americans, and slavery. Let me know, I do tutoring.

Relax, why so angry? Like me, he loves and celebrating his adopted country. Not happy, dont let the door hit you on way out.

It’s 100 degrees out, and I’d be sweating balls under my mask that wouldn’t even protect me from the unmasked MAGA chuds as I mingle with the basest, dumbest, most racist and ignorant trash America has to offer,

That'll be a NO from me.

Wouldn’t we have seen a spike at this point? Also, I was at the protests and was relieved that so many people were wearing masks or keeping safe distances or both.

Should we be brace for a lot of admissions at the DC area hospitals like MedStar, INOVA, etc. ? Or are these people going to be bringing it back to places like PA, Southern VA etc?

Can the mayor refuse to comply with the event? Can she stop it in anyway, seeing lots of events canceled nationwide!

No my understanding is that the mall is federal and events on the mall are not something she has any authority over.

Yup that’s right. She has no jurisdiction over federal property but the District did pull permits on the parade.

I assume you felt the same about people attending the large protests over the last month?

Not PP, but yes! And I’m a leftie.

OP here. My worry is that visitors downtown stay the weekend in DC and surrounding communities and/or DMV residents return home after a long day on the mall with what I assume will be many people without masks (maybe I’m wrong and most people will wear masks).

These people catch and spread the virus and covid spikes again.

We have just come to Phase 2 in MoCo and my zip code had one of the highest levels of infections.

I think this is a terrible idea and can’t imagine any leader who cared about the wellbeing of their citizens wanting this event to go on this year.

Was that supposed to be some kind of zingy retort? Fail.

Feeling strongly enough about the BLM to want to protest is not the same as watching a Fireworks display.

I attended the protests, mainly local people, most socially distancing, and nearly all wore masks! For a public good to highlight injustices that were already going on!!! Not for freaking fireworks on a controversial holiday at the least and especially as he has been taunting the mayor about clearing the streets. Fine if he wants fireworks why doesn't he have them at his home in Florida and let all who want to go see, provides buses, I don't care but not in my hometown when the CDC says no social gathering over 10! A 5 year old could tell you this makes no sense, no wonder Americans banned in Europe, the USA is a laughing stock / horror show you can't stop watching at how utterly ridiculous this and the anti-mask campaign by government officials is!

Sorry, you still took part in mass gatherings, with tons of people yelling and chanting (not to mention mask wearing not nearly as universal as you claim and often no distancing), in the middle of a pandemic. You don’t really have grounds to stand on to criticize other people for also gathering together.

Yes I do because it wasn't a government sponsored, Covid is peaking and this is a gov sanctioned event. The mayor and CDC are against large gathering, and during this time if you don't think a fly-over and 35 minute firework show is a waste of time then you've lost your mind.

Why would government sponsorship matter? It’s ok to make the pandemic worse as long as the government wasn’t sanctioning it? That doesn’t make any sense. And here in DC, the protests were very much supported by the local government, even if not formally sanctioned by them.

I never said the fireworks aren’t a waste of time. I won’t be attending and I wish others didn’t either. But I also didn’t attend the protests. And I live little patience for people sanctimoniously mocking bumpkins who attend gatherings when they did the exact same thing quite recently.

It doesn’t matter that you felt (and I don’t disagree) that you were protesting for a good cause. You still took stupid, dangerous actions in the middle of a pandemic and it’s rich how you criticize others for doing the same.
