The mod schedule is great. DD loves it.

I thought Madeira had gotten more competitive

B student with b- and average activity/nice person admitted. We were happily surprised. I only know two girls here on the waitlist and one already got in. Block schedules are not great.

Madeira is open about their college admissions. In comparing to other local private schools, I don't see a big difference. If anything Madeira's admissions are more impressive when looking at the highly competitive, smaller liberal arts colleges such as Amherst, Wellesley and Williams. This fits with the profile of the school which emphasizes a holistic approach and prioritizes developing empowered female leaders within a welcoming, community oriented campus culture.

I have no dog (or horse) in this fight, but the persistent vitriol is remarkable.

All independent schools do I clicked on this thread because of interest in the school. Some people still associate it with its former high WASP reputation, but it hasn't been that way in a while. It's college admissions may not be quite as strong as NCS or Holton, but it does prepare student for college and top academic students go to good schools. (This is my vague impression.)

I think each grade is about 80 girls or so.

It used to be Episcopal but when Episcopal became coed it switched to Woodberry Forest which is far away

What kind of grades do you need for Madeira?

A fat checkbook.

This was the biggest draw for us. Accepted with slightly better grades and high average ssat. My sense was that they look at the whole girl in building classes.

Straight As. High 90s in SSAT. Extracurriculars.

Overall, a great kid - I’m sure she had glowing letters from teachers.

This is true. My daughter is there. The five-week mod system involves learning a lot at a very fast pace and having at least one and often two tests a week. For some subjects it's no problem for her. For others, it's a struggle. And most of the teachers are tough graders.

The social atmosphere is lovely. Really nice students, friendly, collaborative atmosphere, no cliques!

Straight Fs and full pay should be enough.

Yes a student with Bs can get into Madeira. Because they start in 9th, they have more spots to fill so it’s easier to get into than some of the schools with fewer spots. With that said, once you get in, Madeira is quite rigorous. It will potentially be a lot more work to get Bs there than in Middle. They offer study halls and plenty of time for girls to get help so for the student that takes advantage of this they can do great.
