Sorry to burst your bubble, but this is not advanced, it's normal. Not knowing any of these things at this age....is also normal.

Also with a parent who says things like "shapes and colors really don't need taught" and "numbers and letters need taught," she probably isn't learning everything correctly anyway. The poor child is going to need grammar lessons up the wazoo!

There is a wide range of normal.

Kid 1: Colors, shapes, by 3. Numbers and letters by 4, reading at 5.

Kid 2: Colors, shapes by 4. Some letters and numbers 1-20 by 5, all letters/counting to 100 by January of kindergarten. Reading (basic) by end of kindergarten.

Kid 3. Colors, shapes at 2.5. Numbers 1-15 by 4, in addition to 15 letters.

If you have concerns, mention it at your next visit to the pediatrician. DCUM is not the real universe. Reading this board, anyone with a normal kid would think he/she is behind.

For the life of me I couldn't tell you the answer to that question for either of my daughters and the oldest is only six now so it's not like this was a long time ago, it's just how unimportant this information is.

2 for one (she knew most of her sounds too). 3 for the other. Maybe not over 20 though.

Neither read early either. Oldest tested into gifted classes but only in reading, and she slipped down that percentage the older she got bc she actually doesn’t like to read so it’s like 90th now. Lol. Youngest is a below average reader and really good at math. I don’t know that it means much.

Colors: 13 months
Letters & Shapes: 18 - 20 months
Numbers: count to 20 by age 2, 100 by age 3

My daughter just turned 4 and knows all of this. She probably knew it around 3 1/2.

Kid 1 -- just turned 5, right before Kindergarten

Kid 2 -- 18 months? Not sure exactly, but around them, has turned out to be profoundly gifted.

Kid 3 -- a few months after turning 4

All of this in two languages around 4. She's a bit over 4 now and really getting work number sense and simple addition. Can't read, no interest, can write a couple letters. Loves being read to and has an amazing imagination.

Shapes and colors before 2.5. Numbers (10-100) and letters shortly after 3. DS also started reading before 3.5. Our Montessori school has been amazing! We work with him at home too but I credit preschool for the majority of his progress in the last year.

Child 1, all before 2 (including complex shapes like pentagons and octagons) and was reading at 2.5. Has ASD.

Child 2, NT, 3-4 for letters, numbers 1-10, 5 for numbers much above 10.

2.5, 3, 3.5 -every kid is different
my child that was 3.5 knew nothing, and I was worried then in like a week it all clicked and he all of the sudden knew it all.

- Named shapes by 2.5
- Identified all capital letters before 2
- Can count to 20 at 3.
- Could name some colors by 18 months and at 3 names shades.

DD is approaching 3.5. She does not know all letter sounds. I think she knows most lowercase letters, but I’m not sure. She can only recognize some numbers.

There is a wide range of normal for these skills. DD is pretty bright, but she struggles in other areas, namely the physical skills.
