DC had wanted that statute down for years. Its on federal property and I think it needs Congressional approval to be removed. Congress won’t give it for reasons surpassing understanding but arising out of the completely dysfunctional nature of the DC-federal relationship. Its behond stupid the city has been stuck with this offensive statue for so long.
Correct - the statute was like five feet from MPD headquarters. DC has been trying for decades to get it removed. Thanks Zoomers.
Yes, in other places where the city council unanimously voted to remove a statue from their own city, which is what happened here, they’d be allowed to. Not the case bc of, frankly, racist attitudes toward our local government by a congress. Pike was a KKK founder. I don’t believe in “erasing history”—this IS history. But up an interpretive sign about what used to be there, and what was going on Juneteenth 2020 to finally topple it.
Then get involved in city politics and work to empower your city council / divest congress/ I know, it's complicated and hard and takes work. So much easier to beat up a statue.
Let's put up interpretive signs on the businesses whose windows were smashed as well. How about we put up interpretive signs for murder victims, commemorating what used to be there? Lawlessness is made all the better with interpretive signs.
