Defund the police means to shift some of the police budgets from the police to other social services, including community centers, youth leagues, social workers, home nurses and therapists, etc. Municipal funds can and should be reexamined and redistributed to invest in cities, not just tanks for police departments. What would you want to see to make your area a better place?
Thank you for this explanation. I am totally for "defunding the police" and I didn't even realize it

Defund The Police means a significant reduction or elimination of the budget for a Police Department.

Most Minneapolis Minnesota Legislators agreed to eliminate the Police Department last week.

Why Define the Police? The Police & City are unable to change its continuing pattern of racial discrimination.

Legislators in your DC Area Jurisdictions will soon consider defunding the Police too.

Looting videos. The Santa Monica video. Molotov Cocktail video. Fade to “Defund the Police?” It writes itself.

No. What a lazy knee-jerk answer.

Here is a better place to start.

NP here. I get that defund the police doesn’t literally mean to abolish it, but only because I’ve taken to the time to dig into it a bit more online. I agree with another poster who said it’s poor messaging. Why even say “defund” something that you’re not really trying to defund. It just gives ammo to the Breibarts of the world to claim BLM wants to get rid of police altogether and then conservative boomers will forward these articles in emails as a scare tactic to make the protestor’s demands look crazy.

Why not something about “redefine policing” or something like that. There has got to be a better way to get the message across than “defund the police,” but not we don’t really mean defund, we just want to use the word defund and assume people know that isn’t what we actually mean.

There are serious scholars and activists who have put years into this idea. You just haven't been reading the right journals or listening the right folks.

Police "reforms" have been underway for a decade, and we still have to march in the streets because cops do things like pull suspects out of the police car so they can sit on their necks for 9 minutes.

How can you argue that good cops exist when three officers sat there and watched a man be murdered? What reforms would you suggest in that case?

You clearly don't understand what a slogan is or the importance it has in gaining momentum for a cause. When you are chanting in the streets, no one is going to listen to a long explanation of what it is. Nor does it work for traditional media or social media or any place where people are barely reading or listening beyond a headline.

What’s more terrifying is that a grown adult clearly doesn’t know the difference between defund and abolish.

It is more accurate to say that Minneapolis is abolishing the police department.

The people who can’t leave. Everyone with any resources is going to leave that city. What a horrible horrible idea
