It's not against the law.

YES IT IS.

OP was driving speed limit. The law is for those driving TOO SLOW, meaning under the speed limit.

Right in the article. You need to stay to the right unless passing. It has nothing to do with speed. You can be going 10 over and if you’re camped in the left with no one in the right, it’s not legal. You can be charged with speeding and not keeping to the right.

Why do people stay left anyway?

Anonymous wrote:OP is right. You can't have arbitrary speed limits. If 50 mph is too slow, then the gov't needs to change the limit, not punish citizens for obeying it.

Agreed.

All the people criticizing OP for not going faster than the speed limit in the left lane should be pulled over and given fines when they do it, because that is most definitely against the law!!!

Exactly!!

Apparently in the left lane, it is. I have been given a ticket for driving in the left lane. I learned by lesson in New Jersey where they are very serious about this. If you were going 50 in the left lane on GW parkway I guarantee there was miles of traffic behind you that had to zig and zag to pass you. You were combative with the officer. Say you weren’t aware, are sorry and move on.

He was also an immigrant/POC. So that definitely ups your chances of being killed.

Anonymous wrote:OP again, 22:40...I only questioned him because he said I was driving too slow in the left lane, but I was driving the posted speed limit of 50mph. If the argument is that left lane drivers can drive at a higher rate of speed to keep up with the flow of traffic, then who decides how fast is too fast? I got a speeding ticket in DC last year for driving 40 mph in a 25mph
zone, but I had no idea the posted speed limit was 25mph because the sign was completely obstructed. When I went before the hearing officer to challenge the ticket, she said that
the default speed limit everywhere in DC was 25 mph, unless otherwise posted. With that information in mind, I didn't think I'd ever be penalized for driving the posted speed limit. Had I been driving 60 mph in the left lane on that same stretch of road, a different, less hurried officer may have very well pulled me over for speeding.

You really need to take a driving class. I wish he had issued the ticket. Perhaps your insurance company will realize what a danger you are and price you out of driving once and for all.

100% it is the law that the left lane is for passing! I cannot believe you people don't know or refuse to believe this. OP: when a police officer pulls you over for stupidity, do not argue. Apologize, thank him for not issuing you a ticket and please, for god's sake, learn how to drive.

I, too, am amazed how many people here do not know this is a law. OP was obstructing traffic and needed to be in the right lane. Complain about the officers poor bedside manner if you want, but you won't win any argument about your driving being in the "right."

For the record, I think the OP’s post was dumb.

However, given that the Parkway is owned by the Federal Government and patrolled by the Park Service Police, is it subject to Virginia traffic laws?

The left lane is for passing. I have no problem with people being shot for violating this.

She broke the law by riding unnecessarily in the passing/left lane.

This. I’m surprised so many people on this thread don’t know this law. The left lane is for passing only.

I will bet that every single poster who didn’t know this is from Virginia.

OP is the entitled type who has to be in the left lane.
