ok, but NoVA is way bigger than Arlington, which is a tiny county.

Born and lived all my life in MD now considering moving to northern VA - dont laugh. While this may not seem like a big move for most, for this MD girl who swore to always hate VA - it is. I have small kids and want a home in a neighborhood that is aligned to great schools. I could find that in MD but don’t want to move to the suburbs as I’m currently in SS. Also long term my kids would have better college options in VA.

I say all that to say, if you’ve made the MD to VA move - what’s it like? Is the air different and how does it feel to live in a republican state?

Don't come. The fact that you tell this story and think it's okay (that you swore to always hate VA) says to me that you are too provincial to live in NOVA.

I live in Arlington too. Those people who opposed the name change are overwhelmingly old white people. Did you stream the school board meetings where people spoke against the change? I did. All old people. It's not like your typical 30-40yo is fighting to keep Lee on the high school!

^^^^This. Lots of the pro-Lee people were quite old, and many of them now live outside of NoVA (further South, natch). Are there vestiges of the Old South? Sure, but the younger people are working on tearing them down, one by one.

If OP likes SS, no reason South and Central Arlington wouldn’t be comfortable. Just may be out of the price range.

Fairfax had a 9-3 Democratic school board and it took them 3 years to rename a high school named after a confederate with several Democrats (Megan McLaughlin, K***n Corbett Sanders and Tammy Derenak Kaufax) tossing up roadblocks at every step.

Moved from NoVA to MD and I miss NoVA. I've lived in MD before this too and NoVA is much better. But close in NoVA neighborhood with good schools is going to cost you $$$$ a lot more than Silver Spring prices.

Good thing they passed that gun law and kept some people from moving there. It’s already crowded. The State universities are full as is the excellent public school system. What else can they do to stop the in flow?

Long story, but I years ago I had to move what I feared was a loaded pistol from DC to VA. (Turned out I was correct!) I was terrified about being pulled over since possessing even ammo in DC can get you in a ton of legal trouble. I did a bit of research and found out that as soon as I crossed the Potomac it would be perfectly legal to drive around with an unregistered gun so long as it was not within my reach while driving. Insane! No registration, no special safety training, no background check.

A few years back some guy was walking through a park in VA and a Labrador pup came bounding up to him. He yelled at the owner to call the puppy off, but the dog didn't retreat, so the guy shot the dog dead right there in the middle of a park. Apparently, it is against the law to have a large knife to cut your watermelon in that park, and you cannot do archery. But you're always entitled to pack heat and shoot pets with bad manners in VA. I won't say I'd absolutely never ever live in Virginia, but I can't imagine ever wanting to make a home there. Add in the hideous sprawl and sterile 1970s architecture and there's nothing about NoVa that appeals to me. The rest of VA is beautiful but if you're not White it doesn't feel welcoming or safe in those rural areas and small towns.
