I get the feeling that the OP feels responsible for a good outcome for the mother, and I don't see that happening the way things are now. It's a dynamic common to sons and daughters who were abused, one way or another, with a chaotic and unpredictable parent who had serious problems (untreated mental illness, and/or serious personality disorder, and/or substance abuse -- sometimes all three).

Why are you not buying your mother a ticket right away, for today? To come live with you? Is she a drug addict? Violent? Abusive? Those would be the only reasons(something equally terrible counts too) that I would not have my mom who ended up homeless come live with me.

Forget about buying a vehicle. Call up some cheap hotels nearby and ask for a weekly or monthly rate (or have her walk around and ask). Those places are desperate for business, and you can probably get one at a really good rate. Not a chain hotel -- a low-end budget motel. Use Googel Maps and search as it'll show the low-end ones that don't even appear on Expedia.

Also, once she gets unemployment, it's back-dated to when she first applied. And there's a $600 bonus from the feds on top of it.

DId she get her stimulus payment yet?

I know that this is hard for the 1 percenters on DCUM to understand, but not everyone has the luxury of saving money. Millions of people in this country live paycheck to paycheck, and one minor catastrophe or life event happens and they are wiped out. Get a clue! That being said, I would encourage OPs mom who is in this situation to get out of California. That is one of the worst places to be if you don’t have much money.

I am going to disagree with everyone who says that she needs to move in with you. This will be hell on you if you two can't spend a few days without arguing. I live with my elderly mom because she also has no income and it's hell. I think you can buy her a ticket to come visit until Social Security kicks in but then she finds her own place. There is no need to disrupt your entire life op. She made her choices in life. I am not saying not to help her, but moving in with you is not a solution I would consider.

Before COVID-19 hit my mom was already scheduled to come visit her grandchildren for two weeks at the beginning of June. So she's already scheduled to come in June (hopefully) if the airline doesn't cancel her flight. I'm going to try to pursuade her to stay when she comes to visit.


Don’r wait until June—pay a change fee and have her come asap.


Seriously an airline change fee - or even a brand new flight will be cheaper than buying her a new car.

Why do you have to be judgy and scrutinize everything? OP never said she lost the apartment due to the COVID job loss. Plus, she didn’t have savings, not everybody is good with money. Is that news to you? Be helpful or be quiet. Sheesh.


But if you lost your job at the beginning of April, you still got a paycheck for the last two weeks of March around mid April. Was your mom spending more than 50% of each paycheck on rent?

LA person again- I really need you to know how hot it is right now. Your mom will have to sleep in her car with windows open (not safe) or windows closed where she will overheat. You can get her a cheap motel. There are weekly room rates. Buying another car won’t solve her problems because it’s too hot to be sleeping in a car. We are having a heat wave right now and it’s in the 90s. Our summer weather starts early and it’s summer now.
