Argument was that daycares should close! Peviously people thought kids didn't get the virus and thus couldn't spread it. If they do get it and can spread it, they should be shut down.

Wouldn't that be a lot of daycares, though? There are probably a lot of daycares in the District that have kids of doctors, nurses, ambulance drivers, etc.

My BIL is a drug salesman and thinks his job is essential and daycare should stay open for him. His wife is essential as a nurse. He should stay home with his kids

Wtf? So many jobs can’t be done from home. All those doctors and nurses caring for patients with this virus, what are they supposed to do for childcare for their own children?!?

The problem with that is there are probably more workers that are "necessary" to the function of civic society than you think (not me, my job is 100% not crucial).



And those parents, if both jobs are essential, should have skeleton daycares and elementary care available.

You’re fortunate. Many employees cannot work from home.

Most doctors and nurses have kids, as do pharmacists and grocery store employees. They have no choice but to work. If all daycares are closed, who will watch their children?

I see both sides.....it’s a very difficult situation and decision. The failure of our president has made it much worse. There should be funding available to pay workers, who are not essential personnel, to stay home with their children. Essential personnel should get hazard pay in addition to regular pay, funded by the government. If we could just slow 3/4 of the country down, keep them isolated, I believe things would turn around before we become Italy.


Its not jost those folks. State and county governments, social workers, police, any of the helping or service professions.


+1. We still have infrastructure that need to be maintained. Unless you plan on digging a latrine in your backyard, the sewer and water treatment still needs tending. Same with our electric grid. Communication and cell towers.
And these people have children that need care.

They need childcare for their elementary school aged kids now.

Why should a daycare be different than a nanny elementary school? Are daycare teachers less worthy of protection?

Daycares should absolutely be shut down.

If we had a functioning federal government, or a somewhat-competent president, we would be COORDINATING these steps.

President* should have gone on TV yesterday and said "we're closing schools and all employers should allow work from home. This is a crisis but we will get through it, with some sacrifice from everyone".


I'm a fed and our director has instructed us all to telework next week as a test of our IT infrastructure. We have been given guidance that they understand we may need to also juggle care of our children during this time and to do our best keeping an accurate representation of time worked on our timesheet and we are trying to get approval if we can use a sick leave charge code for the rest of the time. My organization is taking these steps because they want us to stay safe and have the power to do that regardless of what is coming from our administration. My point is that some organizations within the federal government are already doing this.
