Hmm I never even thought of this. Like hell my 10 year old son would come in the ladies bathroom with me!!

It's all just so wrong especially given his difficulties. Like the shaming in the dirty bathroom aspect really was a strong part of the discipline.

Yes .. the point of the discipline was humiliation. It being published all over the internet was just bonus.

Yes, this is what rubs me the wrong way about it. Discipline shouldn't be about humiliation.

I don't think it was about humiliation per se. If she wanted to really humiliate him, she would've made him do it in the aisle. She took him some place where there was some privacy, and obviously that can't be the men's room. And she probably didn't want to leave the store just yet because she still had things to get done. So, the next best place was the women's bathroom.

I don't know if she knew a woman was recording it, but as far as talking about it on social media, she probably 1. wanted a bit of fame 2. felt she was attacked and wanted to defend herself.

Typical boys above 6 or 7 or so find being in a women's restroom embarrassing. Kids who are old enough to stand up are constantly told to TOUCH NOTHING while they're in a public restroom and at potty training age are inculcated that bathroom floors are dirty and disgusting. The humiliation and disgust of being in a women's restroom and on the floor are absolutely part of the punishment.

+1.

WTH is wrong with people? This is why we have such poorly behaved kids and adults: bad parenting.

How about you parent your kids in a way that's effective for YOUR kids. I'll parent mine in a way that's effective for them.

Something to keep in mind:

If you’re resorting to rolling around a Hobby Lobby bathroom with your kid, you’re not parenting your kid in a way that’s effective for them.

Going home is rewarding bad behavior. The kid is bored out of his mind at Hobby Lobby.

+1 I never understood this.

Kids *hate* running errands with their parents. They don't want to go. They act up at the store, and so you leave to "punish" them? That makes zero sense. No wonder there are so many kids who act up at stores.

You don't fit in at Hobby Lobby unless you're dragging 4 kids who don't want to be there.

EXACTLY!!!!! The kid gets some physical activity and "punishment" for misbehaving.

Anonymous wrote:Sure. Seems like an effective parenting technique for that one kid. Good for the mom for instilling discipline. I don't see the issue as long as washed his hands.

Why do you think it was effective?

What a clusterf***. If he has these issues, are these evidenced-based practices to manage these behaviors?

It seems contradictory - don't touch stuff in the bathroom, but oh you didn't listen, then get on the grimy floor.

And as others PP have mentioned his name and medical diagnoses are now public record.

Im always weary of the whole "he wasn't listening" and so he needed punishment aspect. I think some parents hold this listening leash too tight and have too high a standard - especially when a kid is in store or has been shopping for hours or in a very stimulating environment like Disneyworld or a big party. I have some sensitivities to stimulation - especially noise and light- with my ADD. Too much noise, too much light, too many people can make me twitchy. I easily get flustered, hot, and crabby. During labor, I had to beg for them to turn the lights down because I couldn't concentrate on relaxing with fluorescent lights in my face. Kids at that age still need to develop control over their impulses and use language to try and work through their concerns.

Shaming doesn't work either and that whether that was the intent, it certainly was the outcome.
