Why is that odd? Nearly all animals have a hunting season and then it's illegal during other times. Not all animals have federal protection though like geese.

NP. Animal control officers would take the goose to a shelter if it’s still alive and a vet would evaluate it there. It might not be useful to take the goose to a regular vet because birds have different anatomies from cats and dogs and you’d need to track down an avian vet. But, animal rescue officers know where to take injured animals (like City Wildlife in DC, and I believe there’s one in Maryland, maybe in Damascus, that the MoCo animal officers would take the goose to). These specialized places have vets, xrays and other equipment and can make a decision about treatment or euthanasia.

Canada Geese might be protected in the US under the Migratory Bird Treat Act but I’m not an expert on that.

I’m against animal suffering, but letting Animal Control make the calls seems reasonable. We had a creek in our backyard where I grew up and one day some kids with a bow and arrow shot 24 ducks. My mom piled them into our station wagon with a lot of newspaper and my dad’s blessing (my lawyer dad always regretted not going to vet school) and took them all to the vet, and my parents paid for it.

Again, not saying OP needed to drive even one goose to the vet or a shelter. But if it was injured and not dead, not even calling animal control seems cold.

While animal control to remove the dead goose is a good idea, I do not think it is illegal to not call animal control.

OP - you should get Next-door to take down your picture. Tell the moderator that you had no idea that you ran into a goose and were shocked when you saw the post.

We own a lake house, and it’s dock is overrun by Canadian geese. They are protected and we cannot kill them, trap them, harm them, or injure them in any way, shape, or form.

Op- you have a neighborhood of pi$$ed off animal lovers on your case. You may wish to consult an attorney.

We’d love to off our geese, but it’s illegal to do so.

I never said that I would expect anyone to take an injured goose to the vet. You’re putting words into my mouth. I think calling animal control to make sure or maybe even just moving it to the side of the road would be concerned. I don’t see where I said anything differently.

I am not touching or moving any dead or wounded goose, squirrel, possum, deer etc to the side of the road. You call the county, let them deal with it. Someone hit a little deer in front of my house once. Called 311 and said they needed to send someone out to remove. Since it was the weekend, they sent a cop. He moved it off the road and county roads guy collected the remains on Monday.
