I’d avoid the southeast coast as it is overrun and crowded. And avoid July through September although DC is August is pretty awful too.

I’m also in Naples. Love it here, but only stay for the winter. We bought a small condo on the beach and enjoy a beautiful sunset almost every evening.
I’m a moderate Republican and would never think to argue politics with you. Everyone is entitled to their position.
We summer in the Finger Lakes region of NYS which, culturally, is more like the mid-west than the east coast of the US. Many people in SW Florida are midwesterners and the ones I’ve met have all been wonderful people.
You’re right, there is a LOT of money here but no one throws it in your face other than the many nice cars people drive. When we’re out on the beach money doesn’t matter.

The point isn't about arguing. It's about being forced to socialize with and be surrounded by people whose fundamental values are so different than yours. I don't want to be around bad people, period, and Florida is full of them. The state voted for Trump for god's sake.

Can you time those so they happen while in FL and then you avoid state tax?

It's not a question of when the gains happen. It's a question of which state is your primary residence -- i.e. where do you spend MOST of your time. That state is going to be the state you file in for state taxes. If you spend more than 50% of your time in Florida, then you qualify as a Florida resident.

LOL are you asking if Florida has Jewish retirees?

Ha - I know FL has Jewish retirees but pp said Naples (where I know there are lots of Jews) doesn’t have great health care. I am very familiar with South FL which has tons of Jews. I’m not as familiar with the St. John/St. Augustine area near Mayo which a pp mentioned or the Savannah/Hilton Head/Bluffton areas but I’ll just google whether there are any synagogues in those areas. Thanks.

I'm the PP who's parents moved to Bluffton to retire. Their next door neighbors are Jewish, while they are certainly in the minority I think there must be synagogues in the area ( quick googling shows there is one on hilton head). Most people go to church every Sunday- my parents are not religious so don't go to church but have made tons of friends and the fact that they don't go to church has never been an issue.

Our plan at least right now. Once the kids are finished with college or maybe still in college we will sell our current house in MD and purchase a condo in either DC or MD.
We will then plan on traveling to different locations during the winter months in the hopes of finding someplace we will eventually want to relocate to permanently.

I started out looking for a condo and ended up finding a perfect little bungalow a block from the water. I grew up in the north and I can tell you that I regret nothing about being warm year round, living on island time, the wonderful people. I’d take a drive down the coast and find a city or island you like, then consider the real estate options. Some areas trend toward certain options.

I'm sorry for your loss, PP, but this is excellent advice. DH and I are about 10yrs from retirement and want to start planning vacations and long weekends around areas where we might considering retiring. We don't want to stay in the DC area but haven't nailed down where we see the next phase of life, but right now expect it to be somewhere in the SE so it's time to start exploring and see what feels like it could be home. Of course, if the kids end up on the west coast, we'd reconsider and move in that direction, but based on just the two of us someplace warmer and closer to the coast is our preference.

To quote Lucille Bluth:
"I'd rather be dead in California than alive in Arizona."

[Insert 'Florida; for 'Arizona'; '(your choice of retirement)' for 'California']

I'd never heard of this place (I'm outside US) - I just looked it up. Interesting.
Do you work in the area? Do most residents drive to the city for work?

We talked about it, but much of Florida and the southern coast will face increasing flood and heat problems in the coming decades. We decided to split our time between DC and a northern state. There’s a lot of cultural life here.
